Moorhead, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball (11-5, 4-4 NSIC) team traveled to Moorhead, Minn., to face the MSU Moorhead Dragons (9-6, 5-3 NSIC), and swept the match 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-15).
In the first set the Mavericks rushed ahead to a 13-5 lead on the strength of their defensive front, with back to back blocks from
Ashton Lee forcing the Dragons to use their second timeout early. The Mavericks never allowed the Dragons to make it a set and with a combined team effort took the first set 25-11.
The second set was much more tightly contested with both teams playing evenly before a
Mara Quam ace gave the Mavericks a 12-8 lead. The Dragons managed to keep the set close but ultimate the Mavericks were able to take the set 25-21 on a
Haley Shimon kill, taking a 2-0 match lead.
The Mavericks mirrored the first set in the third quickly establishing a 9-2 lead. After a Maverick 5-2 run, the Dragons were forced to use their final timeout early in the set. The set was never threatened by the Dragons as the Mavericks won 25-15, to complete a 3-0 sweep and win in impressive fashion.
Morgan Olson lead all players with 20 kills on the match and added three blocks.
Micayla Porter led all player in assists with 23 and
Quam compiled 19 digs.
Saturday September 29
th, the Mavericks will travel to Aberdeen, S.D., to face off against #3 Northern State with the match beginning at 6:00 p.m.
