#16 Mavericks Play to a Draw Against the Huskies

St. Cloud, Minn.--- No. 16 Minnesota State (5-1-1, 3-0-1 NSIC) plays to a draw against St. Cloud State (2-3-3, 2-1-2 NSIC) 1-1 on Sunday in St. Cloud, Minn.

In an extremely physical first half, Minnesota State was able to possess the ball for most of the first 25 minutes of the half. Senior forward Julia Zach was able to connect with her third goal of the season to push the Mavericks out in front 1-0 in the 18th minute. St. Cloud State was able to come up with a counter in the 26th minute when Hannah Marion slipped the ball past the goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the year, equalizing the score at 1-1. The Mavericks took a while to respond to the Huskies' physical play after the goal. SCSU received two yellow cards in the first half, but was able to keep the ball on their offensive half of the field for much of the last 20 minutes of the first half.

During the second half, the Mavericks came out and matched the Huskies' intensity from the first half. Dominating the possession of the ball and outshooting SCSU eight to two. Nothing came out of the many chances, as regulation ended in a 1-1 draw.

In overtime the wind started to have an effect on the game. It allowed MSU to dominate the first 10 minutes of overtime, never leaving their attacking end of the field. However, the Mavericks were not able to convert on the opportunities. In the second overtime, it was the Huskies turn to dominate ball possession because of the wind effect. Both overtimes came and went with no scoring and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

In total, the Mavericks outshot the Huskies 16-8 (9-4 on goal) even with the Huskies' very physical play.

Junior Alexa Rabune was able to save three of four opportunities, while the Huskies Zoey Welsh made eight saves on nine opportunities.

Minnesota State comes back home to play a pair of games on homecoming weekend starting with the University of Mary on Friday, Sept. 28th at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 30th, the Mavericks will take on Minot State at 12:00 p.m., with both games being played at The Pitch.
