Mavericks Upend Marauders off Cottew's OT Goal

MANKATO, Minn.--- Minnesota State (6-1-1, 4-0-1 NSIC) upended University of Mary (3-4-1, 2-3-1 NSIC) 2-1 in overtime on Friday at The Pitch.

After tying St. Cloud State last week, the Mavericks came out focused and on a mission in the first half against the Marauders. Minnesota State controlled the pace of the match as the ball rarely left the attacking third of the field for MSU. The Mavericks had a lot of chances to break through having an 11-2 (7-0 on goal) shot advantage, but was not able to score in the first half.

The first goal of the match came in the second half during the 60th minute when junior Dakota Wendell was able to beat the goalkeeper to make the score 1-0. Wendell was assisted by senior Abby Hausken on the goal. The Mavericks continued to push and control the ball, but the Marauders were able to get a free kick about 40 yards from the goal. Marauders' Lisa Swardh took the free kick in the 87th minute and the ball squeaked through the traffic and made it in the back of the net. On its first shot on goal of the game, U-Mary was able to tie the score 1-1. Regulation ended with the teams deadlocked at one forcing overtime.

In overtime, the Mavericks had chances and made one count when Wendell was able to cross the ball to the open senior Morgan Cottew. Cottew was able to put her chest on the ball and slip it past the goalkeeper, scoring the game-winning goal in the 96th minute. Wendell was credited with the assist as MSU won the game 2-1.

Overall, the Mavericks outshot the Marauders 23-5 (14-1 on goal) with the only shot on goal going in the U-Mary.

Listen in as Head Coach Brian Bahl, Morgan Seemuth and Dakota Wendell give their thoughts on the game.

The Mavericks continue their weekend of playing at home Sunday, Sept. 30th, as they take on Minot State at 12:00 p.m., at The Pitch.
