Wayne, Neb. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (10-3, 3-2 NSIC) fell in five sets to the Wayne State Wildcats (10-3, 3-2 NSIC) Saturday afternoon in in Wayne Neb., by a score of (25-11, 25-21, 17-25, 21-25, 15-12).
The Wildcats quickly jumped out to an early lead in the first set and the Mavericks weren't able to close the gap at any point and eventually dropped the set 25-11.
The Mavericks showed much more fight in the second set keeping it close throughout and tied the match late at 21-21. Out of a timeout though Wayne State took advantage of a 4-0 run to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Using the momentum gained in the second set Minnesota State rushed out to an earl lead over the Wildcats that they would never relinquish. With an ace from
Joie Veldman and a kill from
Alivia Garbe the Mavericks closed out the set 25-17 to make the score 2-1.
The fourth set was hotly contested throughout but the Mavericks were able to ultimately prevail and take the set 25-21 and force a decisive fifth set.
Minnesota State took a quick 2-0 lead, but the Wildcats fought back to take the lead which they carried to a 15-12 victory.
Garbe led all players in kills with 21 and
Morgan Olson added 20.
Mara Quam led all players in digs with 19 while
Micayla Porter led the Mavericks in assists with 31.
Friday Sept. 21
st the Mavericks will host Southwest Minnesota State at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday will play host to the Sioux Falls Cougars at 2:00 p.m.
