Salt Lake City, Utah ---The Minnesota State volleyball (5-1) team continued its season with their first loss against Truman State (4-1), 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) and a dramatic comeback win over Lubbock Christian (2-3), 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-15, 15-7), Friday at the USI Invitational.
The first match saw the Bulldogs push out to a 17-12 lead behind a strong attack game. Minnesota State however fought back and scored three times unanswered, forcing Truman State to take a timeout, their lead narrowed to 17-15. Time ultimately ran out for the Mavericks though and the Bulldogs took the first set 25-21.
The second set so neither team gain significant separation as the rhythm was very back and forth before the Bulldogs strung together a few points to take a 15-10 lead. The Mavericks again pushed back going on a 3-1 run, narrowing the Bulldogs lead to 18-16. Once again though,
Truman State held off Minnesota State and took the second set 25-21.
The third set, however, saw the Mavericks take the early 8-5 lead. The Bulldogs once again fought back and took an 18-15 lead and were able to ride that momentum to take the final set and the match.
The second match of the day, featuring Lubbock Christian, saw the Lady Chaparrals rush out to an early 17-13 lead over the Mavericks. Lubbock Christian continued to pull away in the set, ultimately taking it 25-17.
The second set once again saw the Lady Chaparrals get and maintain an early edge with the Mavericks cutting the score to 23-20 late. It was too little too late ultimately as Lubbock Christian held on to take the second set 25-22.
The third set saw Minnesota State advance an early lead to 14-8 behind a balanced attack on offense. The Mavericks never looked back in the frame ultimately taking the set 25-12.
Minnesota State continued to play with the lead in the fourth set creating a 10-5 advantage early and used that early edge to take the set and force a fifth and final one.
In the final set the Mavericks jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. With all of the momentum of the comeback behind them the team quickly put away the Lady Chaparrals taking the final set 15-7 and capping off an impressive comeback.
Minnesota State will continue play tomorrow in the Westminster invitational facing off against Fort Lewis at 3:00 p.m. and Westminster at 8:00 p.m.
