Salt Lake City, Utah--- The Minnesota State volleyball (7-1) team continued its season with a win against Fort Lewis (0-3), 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-21) and a win over host school Westminster (2-5), 3-1 (25-27, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20), Saturday in the final day of the Westminster Invitational.
The first set saw both teams trading points before the Mavericks found themselves on top of a 13-11 score forcing the Skyhawks to use their first timeout. Fort Lewis continued to fight back and tied the game at 19 before
Alivia Garbe aced a serve between a pair of defenders. Freshman
Dana Schindler would get the final point of the set for Minnesota State on a powerful strike down the middle making the score 25-21.
The Mavericks maintained their momentum in the second set by gaining an early 4-0 advantage. Minnesota State pushed their lead to 17-9 forcing another timeout from Fort Lewis before
Mara Quam nailed a pair of service aces. The set wouldn't get closer before the Mavericks could close it out 25-13.
The third set started much more even as the score remained tied at 11 before Minnesota State when on a 9-3 run that proved too much for the Skyhawks to overcome.
Morgan Olson led all players with 19 kills and Garbe added 14.
Quam recorded 14 for the Mavericks and
Micayla Porter led the way with 27 assists.
In the second match of the day, Minnesota State faced off against the host team, the Westminster Griffins. The set was extremely even from the first serve, but the Mavericks found themselves in a 21-19 hole late in the match. Minnesota State then pushed back to take a 25-24 lead before the Griffins rallied three straight points to take the first set over the Mavericks.
The second set saw Minnesota State maintaining an early lead and pushing ahead 13-10. Coming out of a Westminster timeout the Mavericks took their advantage to 19-12 behind a 6-1 run. Despite a late run from the Griffins, the Mavericks were able to take the set 25-20 and tie the match.
In the third set Westminster built an early lead before Minnesota State could tie the match up at 8. The teams traded points before the Mavericks were able to pull away and take the set 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Mirroring the start of the third set, the fourth set was very evenly matched early and the first significant lead came when the Mavericks moved ahead 10-5. That lead would prove to be enough as Minnesota State took the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
Olson again led the Mavericks in kills with 16 while
Garbe added 15.
Porter led the team in assists with 30 and
Ashton Lee recorded 7 blocks.
Minnesota State will open NSIC play by traveling to Winona, Minn. to play Winona State Thursday, Sep. 6
th at 6:00 p.m. before their home opener Saturday Sep. 8
th at 7:00 p.m. against Upper Iowa.
