Evansville, Ind. ---The Minnesota State volleyball (4-0) team continued its season with wins against Ohio Dominican (0-3), 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22) and Southern Indiana (1-2), 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-22), Friday at the USI Invitational. With both sweeps completed the Mavericks have not lost a set in their first four matches.
In the first set of the game against Ohio Dominican the Mavericks rushed out to a 9-3 lead. Minnesota State would maintain the edge and take the first set 25-13 behind four kills from freshman
Dana Schindler.
The second set featured both teams trading points before the Mavericks gained some separation taking a 17-13 lead and forcing the Panthers to take a timeout. Ohio Dominican was able to tighten the gap but ultimately the Mavericks took the set 25-22
In the third set the Panthers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. After falling behind 14-8, the Mavericks went on a 6-1 run to narrow the score to 15-14, forcing Ohio Dominican to take another timeout. After trading a few points Minnesota State took its first lead of the set on a
Joie Veldman kill that pushed the score to 19-18 before closing out the match 25-20.
Morgan Olson led all attackers with 14 kills in the match and
Veldman added 12. Freshman
Kalee Peter led all defenders with four blocks and
Mara Quam managed 14 digs.
Lauren Lowry led the way with 20 assists and
Micayla Porter added 18.
The second game featured the host school Southern Indiana. The Mavericks quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the opening minutes of the match. The set would not get much closer as
Alivia Garbe smashed home six kills and Minnesota State took the set 25-14.
In the second set neither team was able to distance themselves until the Mavericks established a 21-18 lead on a
Garbe Kill. Minnesota State pushed the advantage and won the set 25-21.
The third set continued the trend of the second and was tightly contested from the first serve. The Mavericks took a two-point lead at 15-13 when
Garbe once again found a hole in the defense. Minnesota State put Southern Indiana on the verge of defeat after a
Veldman kill gave them a 24-19 advantage and with an attack error from the Screaming Eagles the Mavericks took the final set 25-22 to sweep the match.
Olson once again led all players in kills with 17 and
Garbe added 16.
Porter tallied 25 assists and
Lowry compiled 24 as well while
Quam led the team in digs with 13.
Minnesota State will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to play in the Westminster Invitational on August 31st and September 1st.
