Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State baseball swept No. 1 Augustana in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Bowyer Field on Sunday afternoon. Minnesota State won the first game 3-1 and the second game 13-10.

With the sweep, Minnesota State (30-11, 25-7 NSIC) took 3-of-4 games from Augustana (38-6, 24-6 NSIC) over the weekend.

GAME 1 – Minnesota State 3, Augustana 1

Minnesota State used a three-run fourth inning in defeating Augustana 3-1 in game one.

The Vikings jumped out to an early lead with a single run in the second inning, but the Mavericks answered back with a three-run fourth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Ty Buck and junior left fielder Tyler Berg tallied RBI singles, and senior shortstop Luke Waldek drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.

That was all the scoring the Mavericks would need as three pitchers combined to hold the Vikings to one run on five hits. Senior left-hander Aaron Rozek (7-2) started and limited the Vikings to one run on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Rozek walked five and struck out eight. Junior right-hander Bobby Gauvreau pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Gauvreau allowed one hit, while walking one and striking out one. Junior right-hander Carlo Graffeo earned his fourth save of the season after pitching the final 1 2/3 innings to close out the win. Graffeo retired all five batters faced with two strikeouts.

David Flattery (5-2), who allowed three runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings, was tagged with the loss. Flattery walked two and struck out three.

GAME 2 – Minnesota State 13, Augustana 10

Minnesota State's offense erupted in a 13-10 win over Augustana in game two.

The Mavericks put up crooked numbers in three innings. They scored eight runs in the second, three in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Mavericks trailed 4-0 through the first inning and a half, but would not trail again after their eight-run second inning. Augustana got within one run of the Mavericks with three runs in the top of the fifth inning with the score 8-7, but the Mavericks lengthened their lead by outscoring the Vikings 5-3 from the sixth inning to the end of the game.

Senior shortstop Luke Waldek and junior right fielder Jordan Hart both hit home runs as part of the Mavericks' eight-run second inning. Waldek's home run, his second of the season, was a two-run opposite-field blast over the right-field fence. Hart's homer, his team-leading fifth of 2018, was a three-run shot to right-center field.

Six Mavericks tallied multi-hit games. Senior center fielder Josh Wenzel (3-of-4) and sophomore designated hitter Ty Buck (3-of-4) tied for a game-high three hits.

Four Mavericks drove in multiple runs — led by Hart's three RBI.

Freshman right-hander Trevor Divinski (5-1) earned the win after holding the Vikings to three runs (one earned) on five hits over 3 2/3 innings in relief. Junior right-hander Carlo Graffeo garnered his second save of the day — his fifth of the season — after coming into the game with the tying run at the plate and recording the final out of the ninth inning. Sophomore right-hander Jon Ludwig received a no-decision after starting the game for the Mavericks. Ludwig was charged with four runs on five hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Jed Schmidt (4-2) was on the short end of the decision for the Vikings. Schmidt allowed seven runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Minnesota State concludes regular-season play with a four-game NSIC series at Upper Iowa next weekend. Doubleheaders are slated for Friday and Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and 12:00 p.m., respectively.
