Fayette, Iowa --- No. 19 Minnesota State baseball was swept by Upper Iowa in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Robertson Woods Field on Friday afternoon. Minnesota State lost the first game 5-3 and the second game 7-5.
Minnesota State drops to 30-13, 25-9 NSIC and Upper Iowa improves to 16-23, 14-17 NSIC.
GAME 1 – Upper Iowa 5, No. 19 Minnesota State 3
Dalton Roach struck out 10 batters but allowed two home runs that proved to be the difference as Minnesota State lost to Upper Iowa 5-3 in game one.
Both teams scored single runs in the first inning and the game remained tied 1-1 until the top of the third inning when the Mavericks scored two runs on an error by the Upper Iowa right fielder, making the score 3-1. However, the Peacocks'
Jacob Greco struck twice — hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the third and a two-run homer in the fifth inning that turned the Mavericks' 3-1 lead into a 4-3 deficit. The Peacocks added on one more run in the sixth inning to make the final score 5-3.
Roach (8-1), who struck out double digits for the third time in 2018, was the losing pitcher for the first time this season. He was charged with four runs on six hits (two home runs), over five innings, while striking out 10 and walking three.
The Mavericks, who held an 8-7 edge in hits, were led in hits by sophomore second baseman
Teddy Petersen and senior center fielder
Josh Wenzel, who each had two.
Ryan Munoz (5-2) was the winning pitcher for the Peacocks — limiting the Mavericks to three runs (one earned) on eight hits over six innings. Munoz struck out three and walked one.
Tyus Adkins pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his fourth save of the season for Upper Iowa.
GAME 2 – Upper Iowa 7, No. 19 Minnesota State 5
Minnesota State and Upper Iowa were tied at 4-4 after the top half of the eighth inning, but Minnesota State surrendered three runs in the bottom half of the inning as it lost game two, 7-5.
The Mavericks scored single runs in the third, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to match the Peacocks' multi-run innings. After scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings, the Peacocks put up crooked numbers with two runs in the sixth and three runs in the eighth.
Senior left-hander
Aaron Rozek received a no-decision after allowing four runs on six hits over six innings. Rozek struck out six, walked four and hit two batters.
Junior right-hander
Carlo Graffeo (4-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on two hits in one inning of work. Graffeo struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Senior shortstop
Luke Waldek and sophomore second baseman
Teddy Petersen hit solo home runs for the Mavericks. Waldek's homer tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning and Petersen's home run plated the Mavericks' final run in the top of the ninth.
Parker Kray (2-0) picked up the win for the Peacocks after a perfect two-thirds of an inning to finish the eighth.
Colin Lacey garnered a no-decision after allowing four runs (three earned) on 12 hits over 7 1/3 innings. Lacey struck out five, while walking three.
Tyus Adkins earned his second save of the day — fifth of the season — after pitching the ninth. Adkins allowed Petersen's home run, while striking out one and walking none.
Minnesota State and Upper Iowa conclude their series and the NSIC regular season with a doubleheader at Robertson Woods Field on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
