Mavericks Complete Series Sweep of Marauders

St. Peter, Minn. --- Minnesota State baseball defeated the University of Mary 6-2, 6-3 and 12-5 to complete a four-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series sweep on Friday at Gustavus Field.

Minnesota State improved to 16-7 (11-3 NSIC) and the University of Mary fell to 2-22 (0-14 NSIC).

Each game played on Friday was seven innings.

GAME 1 – Minnesota State 6, University of Mary 2

Minnesota State defeated University of Mary 6-2 behind a strong pitching performance by freshman right-hander Cam Kline.

The game began on Thursday but was suspended after three innings of play, due to field availability. The Mavericks, who led 3-1 when play was suspended on Thursday, held on for the 6-2 victory after the game was resumed on Friday.

Kline (1-0) started the game on Thursday and came back onto the mound on Friday to finish a seven-inning complete game. He limited the Marauders to two runs (both earned) on three hits, while striking out five and walking two.

Junior left fielder Tom Imholte, who went 1-of-3 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored, drove in the Mavericks' first run of the game on a triple in the top of first inning that gave the Mavericks a lead they would not relinquish. Imholte came around to score the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Luke Waldek, which put the Mavericks in front 2-0. With the Mavericks leading 3-1 in the fourth inning, Imholte walked with the bases loaded to make the score 4-1.

Senior designated hitter Ryan Moffett also contributed on offense — going 1-of-2 with two walks, one RBI and two runs scored. One of Moffett's runs scored came on Imholte's walk with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Moffett also drove in the Mavericks' first of two runs in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly, as the Mavericks won 6-2.

Colin Gudereit (0-3), who started for the Marauders on Thursday but did not retake the mound on Friday, was charged with the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on three hits. He walked three and struck out one.

GAME 2 – Minnesota State 6, University of Mary 3

Trevor Divinski struck out 10 batters in six innings and Teddy Petersen hit his first collegiate home run as the Mavericks won the second game of the day, and the first game of the regularly scheduled doubleheader, 6-3.

Divinski (2-0), a redshirt freshman right-hander, limited the Marauders to one run on nine hits in his six innings. He struck out 10, while walking one.

The Mavericks scored one run in the first inning, four in the fourth and one in the seventh.

Petersen, a sophomore who started in left field, hit his first career homer — a three-run shot — to left field with one out in the fourth inning. The home run put Minnesota State up 5-1.

Freshman first baseman Carter Elliott and sophomore designated hitter Ty Buck each drove in one run on a double. Elliot's came in the first inning and Buck's in the seventh.

Buck and Petersen tied for the team lead with two hits each.

Travis Stevens (1-3) was charged with the loss for the Marauders. Stevens surrendered five runs (four earned) on eight hits, while walking two and striking out two, over six innings.

GAME 3 – Minnesota State 12, University of Mary 5

The Mavericks never led and the offense erupted for 12 runs in a 12-5 win in the third game of the day and the final game of the four-game series.

The Mavericks scored four runs in the second inning to go up 4-0. After the Marauders scored one run in the bottom of the third, the Mavericks scored one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the sixth to make the score 12-1. The Marauders scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 12-5 in favor of the Mavericks.

Four Mavericks had two hits each: senior center fielder Josh Wenzel (2-of-4), senior shortstop Luke Waldek (2-of-4), sophomore first baseman Ty Buck (2-of-4), and senior catcher Ryan Moffett (2-of-3).

Three Mavericks drove in two runs each: sophomore outfielder Cody Ulfers, junior outfielder Tyler Berg and Wenzel.

The offense was more than enough for junior right-hander Carlo Graffeo (2-2), who held the Marauders to one earned run on two hits over five innings — while walking three and striking out seven.

Isaac Saad (0-3) was tagged with the loss for the Marauders — allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits over four innings of work. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.

Minnesota State continues NSIC play with a doubleheader at Concordia-St. Paul at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday.
