St. Peter, Minn. --- Minnesota State baseball defeated the University of Mary 2-0 in the opening game of a four-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series on Thursday at Gustavus Field.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended after the third inning, due to Gustavus Adolphus' upcoming doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran College. The game, which the Mavericks were leading 3-1, will resume on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Friday's regularly scheduled doubleheader will now consist of two seven-inning games, which will follow the conclusion of the suspended game.
Senior right-hander
Quinn Ahern (2-1) was dominant on the mound for Minnesota State (13-7, 8-3 NSIC) — limiting the University of Mary (2-19, 0-11 NSIC) to three hits in a seven-inning shutout. Ahern struck out eight, did not walk a batter and lowered his season ERA to 2.17.
Both Maverick runs scored on wild pitches. In the third inning, junior right fielder
Tyler Berg led off the inning with a bunt single. Berg advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman
Tory Miller. After the second out was recorded, Berg scored on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0. The Mavericks second run was scored in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore second baseman
Tommy McDonald drew a walk with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a deep fly out off the bat of sophomore designated hitter
Jack Mattson. McDonald then scored on a wild pitch to make the final score 2-0.
Jake Johnson (0-4) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in a complete game.
Minnesota State and the University of Mary resume game two of their series, followed by a doubleheader, at 9:00 a.m., on Friday at Gustavus Field in St. Peter, Minn.
