Winona, Minn. --- Head Coach
Matt Magers earned his 400th career coaching victory as Minnesota State baseball swept Winona State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Loughrey Field. Minnesota State won the first game 7-4 and the second game 15-2.
Magers' (400-122, .766) 400th coaching victory at Minnesota State came in game two. Magers is the second coach in program history to reach 400 wins.
Dean Bowyer (1977-2008) earned 990 wins as head coach of the Mavericks. Magers entered the season ranked second in winning percentage among active baseball coaches in NCAA Division II.
Minnesota State, which was playing as the home team after the series was moved due to weather, improved to 12-7 (7-3 NSIC), while Winona State fell to (5-12, 4-6 NSIC).
GAME 1 – Minnesota State 7, Winona State 4
Dalton Roach pitched a seven-inning complete and the Maverick offense scored seven runs in the first three innings in a 7-4 win in game one.
The Mavericks scored one run in the first inning, two in the second and four in the third to take a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Senior center fielder
Josh Wenzel led off the game with a triple and scored on a single off the bat of junior left fielder
Tom Imholte. In the second inning, senior catcher
Noah Bluth scored on a wild pitch and sophomore third baseman
Tory Miller garnered a sacrifice fly. In the third inning,
Parker Holmstrom (2-2), the Warriors' starting pitcher, loaded the bases with a hit batsman and two walks. Holmstrom then threw a wild pitch that allowed sophomore second baseman
Tommy McDonald to scamper home from third. After getting the first out of the inning, Holmstrom walked Miller to load the bases for Wenzel, who promptly unloaded them with his second triple of the game — ending Holmstrom's day on the mound.
The Warriors attempted to come back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning and two runs in the top of the seventh, but Roach (5-0) held on for the complete-game victory.
Roach, a senior right-hander, tossed a seven-inning complete game for the Mavericks — limiting the Warriors to four runs on 10 hits, including eight singles. He struck out nine and walked two.
Holmstrom was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs (all earned) on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four.
Wenzel went 2-of-3 with a walk to lead the Mavericks in hits. Both of his hits were triples.
GAME 2 – Minnesota State 15, Winona State 2
The Mavericks scored four runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and eight runs in the eighth, while
Aaron Rozek pitched seven innings in the Mavericks' 15-2 win in game two of the doubleheader.
The win in game two gave head coach
Matt Magers 400 career coaching victories.
In the third inning, junior right fielder
Tyler Berg scored the first run of the game on a fielding error. Senior shortstop
Luke Waldek drove in the Mavericks' second run with a single and sophomore first baseman
Ty Buck capped off the scoring in the third inning with a two-run double, which put the Mavericks up 4-0.
Sophomore third baseman
Tory Miller put the Mavericks up 6-0 with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Later in the inning, Waldek singled to left field and a defensive error allowed Miller to score from second base on the play, increasing the Mavericks' lead to 7-2.
After the Warriors scratched out two runs in the sixth inning pull within five runs (7-2), the Mavericks added eight more runs in the eighth inning to make the final score 15-2 in a run-rule shortened game. Freshman
Carter Elliott made the score 9-2 with a pinch-hit two-run double. Sophomore second baseman
Teddy Petersen and sophomore designated hitter
Jack Mattson followed with RBI singles that put the Mavericks up 11-2. After a walk loaded the bases, freshman
Cam Kline hit a pinch-hit grand slam for his first collegiate home run to cap off the scoring and end the game.
The 15 runs were more than enough for the Maverick pitching staff. Rozek (3-1), a senior left-hander,
continued his strong start to 2018 — limiting the Warriors to two runs (one earned) on four hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked two in the winning effort. The Maverick bullpen did the rest as junior right-hander
Carlo Graffeo pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Tanner Haessly (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Warriors after surrendering seven runs (two earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Minnesota State next faces University of Mary in a four-game NSIC series. The location and game times are TBA.
