Mavericks Drop Doubleheader to Beavers on Friday

Plattsmouth, Neb. --- Minnesota State lost both ends of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader against Minot State on Friday at Plattsmouth High School. Minnesota State lost the first game 7-1 and the second game 12-10. 
 
Minnesota State, which was the home team at the neutral site, falls to 10-7 (5-3 NSIC) and Minot State improves to (8-10, 6-2 NSIC).
 
GAME 1 – Minot State 7, Minnesota State 1
 
Minnesota State never led as it lost game one of the doubleheader with Minot State 7-1 in a scheduled seven-inning game.
 
The Beavers scored one run in the third, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh.
 
The Mavericks' lone run was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore infielder Tommy McDonald garnered a walk with the bases loaded to score junior Tom Imholte, who pinch hit earlier in the inning and was hit by a pitch.
 
Senior right-hander Quinn Ahern (1-1) was charged with the loss — allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out six.
 
Andres Hackman (2-3) earned the win for the Beavers after limiting the Mavericks to one unearned run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six. 
 
GAME 2 – Minot State 12, Minnesota State 10
 
The Mavericks were outlasted by the Beavers in a 12-10 loss in game two of the doubleheader.
 
After the Beavers scored one run in the top of the first, the Mavericks scored three runs in their half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Mavericks extended their lead to 5-1 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. However, the Beavers fought back for two runs in the sixth inning followed by seven runs in seventh to put the Mavericks down 10-5. The Mavericks scored one run in their half of the seventh to make the score 10-6, but the Beavers scored two more runs in the top of the eighth to go up 12-6. The Mavericks, who attempted to come back, scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth and left the bases loaded.
 
The Mavericks' offensive leaders in game two were senior center fielder Josh Wenzel, sophomore third baseman Tommy McDonald and senior catcher Noah Bluth. Wenzel led all players with four hits in five at-bats, while garnering a triple and scoring two runs. McDonald went 3-of-5 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Bluth went 3-of-3 with a walk and four RBI. Two other Mavericks had two hits each: junior left fielder Tom Imholte, and sophomore second baseman Teddy Petersen.  
 
Redshirt freshman right-hander Trevor Divinski started for the Mavericks, but did not factor into the decision. Divinski allowed five runs — all earned — on seven hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked one.
 
Junior right-hander Carlo Graffeo (1-2) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs — two earned — on three hits. Graffeo did not record an out.
 
Jeremy Sylvester (2-0) was the pitcher of record for the Beavers. Sylvester allowed three runs — two earned — on five hits over 2 1/3 innings in relief. 
 
Jaymon Cervantes started for the Beavers, but did not factor into the decision. Cervantes surrendered three runs — two earned — on four hits over 1 1/3 innings. He walked none and struck out one.
 
Brocks Breshears picked up the save for the Beavers. He tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to end the game. He allowed one hit and struck out two batters.  
 
Minnesota State is next scheduled to face Winona State in an NSIC doubleheader on Tuesday at Bowyer Field.
