Mavericks Split Doubleheader with Beavers on Thursday

Plattsmouth, Neb. --- Minnesota State split a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Minot State on Thursday at Plattsmouth High School. Minnesota State won the first game 1-0 before losing the second game 4-2.

Minnesota State is now 10-5 (5-1 NSIC) and Minot State is (6-10, 4-2 NSIC) in 2018.

GAME 1 – Minnesota State 1, Minot State 0

Dalton Roach (4-0) pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout and Carter Elliott drove in the only run of the game as the Mavericks won the first game of the doubleheader 1-0.

Roach, a senior right-hander, walked two batters in the first inning before settling in to limit the Beavers to two baserunners over the final six innings of the game. Roach held the Beavers to four baserunners — two hits and two walks — while striking out six and walking two over seven scoreless innings.

The only run of the game was scored in the fourth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Jack Mattson singled with one out. After the second out was recorded, Mattson advanced to second base on a balk and scored when Elliott, a freshman first baseman, singled up the middle.

Sophomore left fielder Ty Buck went 2-of-3 at the plate to lead the Mavericks in hits.

Justin Demary (1-4) was charged with the loss after allowing one earned run on seven hits and one walks in a six-inning complete game. Demary struck out five and walked one.

GAME 2 – Minot State 4, Minnesota State 2

The Mavericks scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2, but the Beavers scored single runs in the seventh and ninth innings to hand the Mavericks a 4-2 loss in game two.

Minot State took a 2-0 lead with one run in the third inning and one in the sixth. In the Mavericks' half of the sixth, sophomore left fielder Ty Buck came around from second base to score on a wild pitch that bounced away from the catcher. Sophomore designated hitter Jack Mattson, who had reached base on an error and advanced from first to third on the same wild pitch that Buck scored on, scored the Mavericks' second run on an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore second baseman Teddy Petersen.

However, the offense was not enough as the Beavers scored once in the seventh and once in the ninth to make the final score 4-2.

Senior left-hander Aaron Rozek (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs — all earned — on five hits over seven innings. Rozek struck out five and walked two.

Sophomore left fielder Ty Buck went 2-of-4 in the game to lead the Mavericks in hits.

Jack Gamba (1-0) was the pitcher of record on the long end — tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Gamba did not allow a hit, while walking two and striking out two.

Reilly O'Rourke started for the Beavers, but did not factor into the decision. O'Rourke surrendered two runs — one earned — on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Wyatt Moore came on in relief with one out in the ninth and earned the save for the Beavers. Moore retired both the batters he faced to end the game.

Minnesota State and Minot State conclude their four-game NSIC series with a doubleheader on Friday at 10:00 a.m., at Plattsmouth High School in Plattsmouth, Neb.
