Omaha, Neb. --- Minnesota State baseball overcame deficits in both games on Sunday to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 2-1 in game one and 6-5 in game two at Westside High School.
The Mavericks improved to 9-4 (4-0 NSIC) and the Mustangs fells to (5-9, 0-4 NSIC).
GAME 1 – Minnesota State 2, Southwest Minnesota State 1
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one and the score remained the same until the Mavericks scored two runs in the sixth inning to win 2-1 in a seven-inning game.
Redshirt freshman
Trevor Divinski (1-0) was solid on the mound — limiting the Mustangs to one run on seven hits over six innings. Divinski struck out five and did not allow a walk. The win is the first of Divinki's collegiate career.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore
Jack Mattson, who was pinch hitting, drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly to left field. Senior center fielder
Josh Wenzel would later drive in the eventual-winning run with a single to left field that made the score 2-1. Both Maverick runs were unearned after a Mustang error earlier in the inning.
Junior right-hander
Carlo Graffeo closed the door in the seventh — setting down the Mustangs 1-2-3 to end the game.
Cole Petersen (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing two unearned runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Petersen walked three and struck out two.
GAME 2 – Minnesota State 6, Southwest Minnesota State 5
The Mavericks scored three runs in the ninth inning to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 walk-off win over the Mustangs in game two.
Trailing 5-3 going into their final at-bat, senior
Ryan Moffett started the Maverick rally with a pinch-hit walk. Freshman
Cam Kline, who pinch ran for Moffett, advanced to second on a single through the left side off the bat of senior center fielder
Josh Wenzel. Senior shortstop
Luke Waldek singled through the left side to score Kline and move Wenzel to third. Redshirt freshman first baseman
Carter Elliott followed with the game-tying single through the right side that scored Wenzel and moved Waldek to third. The Mustangs then intentionally walked sophomore designated hitter
Jack Mattson to load the bases, followed by a pitching change. The new pitcher walked junior right fielder
Tyler Berg on four pitches as the Mavericks walked off with the 6-5 win.
Junior right-hander
Bobby Gauvreau (1-0) picked up the win for the Mavericks — pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Senior right-hander
Quinn Ahern started the game for the Mavericks, but did not factor into the decision. Ahern allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, while walking one and striking out four.
Shawn Williams (0-2) was the pitcher of record on the short end — charged with three runs on three hits and two walks.
Minnesota State continues NSIC play with a four-game series with Minot State next weekend.
