Mankato, Minn. --- Seventh-rated Minnesota State built a 4-1 lead and held on to claim a 4-3 win over Alaska Anchorage in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Mankato Saturday.
The visiting Seawolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a power play marker from Austin Azurdia at 6:17 of the opening frame, but the Mavericks responded a minute and half later on a goal where sophomore winger Nick Rivera converted in a rebound chance after working a give-and-go with Parker Tuomie at 7:34. Freshman pivot Jake Jaremko tallied his tenth goal of the year when he roofed a shot over the right shoulder of Brody Claeys at 13:02 for a power play goal and Minnesota State entered the locker room at the end of the period owning a 2-1 lead.
Freshman winger Dallas Gerads got his third goal of the year (and second of the weekend) with a nifty backhander at 3:06 of the second and senior forward Zeb Knutson got his fifth point of the weekend with a shot that beat Claeys gloveside at 5:38 and at the end of 40 minutes of action the Mavericks owned a 4-1 advantage.
The Seawolves scored twice in the final period, but couldn't get the game-tying marker. Jonah Renouf scored at 4:27 in making it a 4-2 game and then, with less than a minute remaining and Claeys on the bench for an extra attacker, Azurdia got his second of the game when he deflected a shot from Jarrett Brown past Connor LaCouvee at 19:04 for the game's last goal.
LaCouvee, who made his fifth consecutive start in the game and stopped 15 shots in the process, upped his record to 15-3-0 with the win.
Gerads, who finished the contest with two points with his first career game-winning goal and an assist and was +1 with five shots on goal, was named the game's First Star. Jaremko, the highest-scoring freshman in the WCHA, upped his season points total to 29 (10-19—29) with a goal and an assist. Reggie Lutz chipped in with two assists.
The Mavericks, who outshot UAA by a 46-18 margin in the contest, have now won their last five games.
The Mavericks continue league action next weekend with a road series at Alabama Huntsville.
