DULUTH, Minn. --- Minnesota State comes back from down two in the third period to tie Minnesota Duluth 2-2 in overtime Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.
The Bulldogs were the first to get on the board late in the first period as
Ryleigh Houston juked a Maverick defenseman and then beat freshman
Abigail Levy for a goal at the 18:50 mark. Minnesota State outshot Minnesota Duluth 10-9 in the period, but failed to find the back of the net. MSU also killed the only penalty in the period.
Less than fifteen seconds into the second period, Minnesota Duluth took advantage of a Minnesota State turnover deep in its defensive zone.
Anna Klein fired one past Levy in the bottom right corner as the bulldogs took a 2-0 lead. The Mavericks had their first power-play opportunity in the period, but did not take advantage.
Minnesota State stormed back in the third period, scoring two goals and forcing overtime with Minnesota Duluth. The first goal came at 7:24 into the period with sophomore
Brittyn Fleming scoring her fourth goal of the season. Fleming took advantage of a scrum at the net and poked the puck between the legs of Bulldog netminder
Maddie Rooney to make the score 2-1. Six minutes later, sophomore
Tristen Truax was able to connect with a big slap shot from the top of the left face-off circle. The puck sneaked under the crossbar as Truax lit the lamp for the third time this season. The Mavericks controlled the puck for the last two minutes of the period in their offensive zone, but could not put one past Rooney.
Overtime came and went without any goals scored even though MSU had a couple of prime chances. Freshman
Brooke Bryant stole the puck at the opposite blue line and had a break away opportunity with 20 seconds left. Bryant skated in towards Rooney and the puck deflected off Rooney's skate as the game ended in a tie. UWD ended up winning the shootout 1-0 in three rounds.
Levy (8-6-3) finished with 21 saves on 23 opportunities and her counterpart, Rooney, finished with 31 saves on 33 opportunities.
The Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs 33-23 and both teams went 0-2 in power-play opportunities.
Minnesota State (8-6-3, 3-6-2-1 WCHA) will wrap up the series with Minnesota Duluth tomorrow at 4:07 p.m., back at AMSOIL Arena.
