Mavericks Come Up Short In St. Paul

St. Paul, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team (5-5, 2-4 NSIC) lost their game with the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears (8-3, 4-2 NSIC)  65-54 Sunday afternoon in St. Paul. 

In the opening quarter both teams struggled to find a rhythm on offense, but the Mavericks came out of the quarter with an 8-7 lead thanks to a late 6-0 run. 

Tayla Stuttley got Minnesota State on the board early in the second with a layup to extend the lead.  The Golden Bears responded with a 22-7 run in the remainder of the second quarter, giving them a 29-17 edge at the half.

The rebounding margin was even for both teams at the half, but the Mavericks led 9-4 on the offensive glass.  Minnesota State also held the edge in bench scoring with 8 compared to 0. Stuttley, Rylee Menster, and Rachel Shumski led the Mavericks in scoring with 4 each at the half. 

After the Golden Bears scored quickly to start the half, the Mavericks responded with a 9-0 run to narrow the deficit to five and forced Concordia-St. Paul to take a timeout.  The run for Minnesota State continued after the stoppage as the run extended to 16-0 on a three-pointer from Taylor Drost, and the Mavericks took their first lead of the half, 33-31.  Both teams traded baskets and the quarter ended as the Golden Bears re-took the lead, 44-41, going into the fourth.

Concordia-St. Paul pulled away in the fourth quarter taking advantage of a 15-8 run in the opening minutes, giving them a 59-49 lead with 3:21 to go.  The teams traded points down the stretch to ultimately give the Golden Bears the 65-54 win.

Shumski led the Mavericks with 14 points while adding seven rebounds and two steals.  Drost also scored in double digits with 12 points while adding a block and a steal.  Monica Muth led Minnesota State in rebounds with ten and added eight points.The Mavericks held the advantage in rebounds 50-44 and pulled down 25 offensive boards. 

The Mavericks will remain on the road next weekend when they travel to Minot, N.D. Friday at 5:30 p.m., to take on Minot State before traveling to Bismarck, N.D. Saturday, to face U-Mary at 3:30 p.m.
