Minot, N.D. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team (5-6, 2-5 NSIC) lost their game with the Minot State Beavers (6-7, 1-6 NSIC) 93-87 in overtime Friday night in Minot.
In the opening quarter the Beavers quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead before the Mavericks responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead. The defenses for both teams clamped down for the remainder of the quarter and the Mavericks finished the first quarter with a 14-13 lead.
The second quarter saw both teams drill a couple of early three-pointers, but the Minnesota State defensive pressure forced three turnovers in a span of less than a minute, and the Mavericks held a 26-21 edge with 4:50 to go in the half. The Beavers cut the lead down to one point, but Minnesota State rallied off a 9-0 run, and weathered a late push to take aa 37-33 lead into halftime.
Rachel Shumski led the Mavericks in scoring in the first half with 11 points and added three rebounds. Freshman guard
Rylee Menster added seven points, and freshman center
Kristi Fett led the team in rebounds with eight, adding four points of her own.
Minnesota State outrebounded Minot State 21-15 in the half and scored 14 points off turnovers.
The opening moments of the second half were all Mavericks as they pushed their lead back up to ten, before the Beavers responded with eight unanswered to tie the game at 44. Minnesota State and Minot State traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter as the Mavericks took a 59-58 lead into the fourth.
Minot State jumped ahead in the opening minutes of the third quarter and extended their lead to 74-67 with 4:04 to go when they drilled a deep three-pointer.
Kirstin Klitzke cut the lead to four when she responded with a three of her own, and a block by
Tayla Stuttley allowed the Mavericks to find
Klitzke again for an open two-pointer on the break. After trading some free throws,
Kitlzke drilled another three-pointer from the right corner to tie the game with 1:50 to go.
With the game tied under a minute to go,
Fett drilled a contested lay in to give the Mavericks a 2-point lead, and Minnesota State forced the Beavers to turn the ball over on the end. With time winding down Minot State was forced to foul
Stuttley who made both of her free-throw attempts, extending the Maverick lead to 82-78 with 16 seconds to go. After an early foul by the Mavericks, the Beavers tightened the game, and forced another turnover, giving them an opportunity to tie the game or win it. On Minot
State's final possession, they cut to the basket and made a layup to tie the game and send it to overtime.
In the overtime period, Minot state got on the board first, and extended their lead to four with 2:09 to go. After a couple of free throws from each team, the Beavers hit a three-pointer to take a seven-point lead with 26 seconds to go. That would prove to be too much to overcome and Minot State finished the game with a 93-87 win.
Stuttley led the Mavericks with 15 points while adding six boards and three assists and
Monica Muth and
Shumski each finished with 13.
Fett finished the game with 11 rebounds and eight points. Minnesota State won the rebound battle 42-35, and outscored the Beavers bench 40-10 in the game.
The Mavericks will remain on the road tomorrow, traveling to Bismarck, N.D., to face U-Mary at 3:30 p.m.
