Minnesota State Falls 2-0 to #6 Ohio State in Series Finale

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State drops the series finale to #6 Ohio State 2-0 and earn a series split Sunday afternoon at Verizon Center.

The Buckeyes came out with vengeance in the first period, throwing up 22 shots on goal and having another 18 blocked by the Mavericks. 7:43 into the period, Tatum Skaggs scored on a scrum in the crease on the Mavericks first penalty of the game. This was the first goal given up by the Mavericks since the second period in the series finale against Robert Morris. Seven minutes later, Lauren Boyle took a shot from the center of the blue line and Samantha Bouley tipped it at the top of the crease, past freshman Abigail Levy to extend the lead to 2-0. Levy ended the period with 20 saves as Minnesota State blocked another 18 shots by Ohio State.

The second and third periods went scoreless as the Mavericks settled down and skated evenly with Buckeyes. MSU outshot OSU 20-18 in the last two periods, but were just not able to put one in the back of the net. Minnesota State totaled 26 blocked shots with freshman Anna Wilgren leading the way with six.

Levy (8-6-2) ended the day with 38 saves on 40 opportunities and her counterpart, Andrea Braendli, finished with 27 saves and a shutout.

The Mavericks (8-6-2, 3-6-1-1 WCHA) will travel to Duluth, Minn., in the last series before the holiday break. Minnesota State will take on Minnesota Duluth at 7:07 p.m., on Friday and then 4:07 p.m., on Saturday.
