McKay Earns Shutout As Mavericks Down Lake Superior State Saturday

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. ---   #4 Minnesota State got a shutout effort from freshman netminder Dryden McKay as the Mavericks skated to a 3-0 win at #20 Lake Superior State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Saturday.

The Mavericks owned a 1-0 lead at the end of 20 minutes of action due to a power play marker from junior winger Charlie Gerard. The goal by Gerard, his fifth of the season, came at the 6:36 mark.  Then, at 5:55 of the second period, junior Parker Tuomie got his stick on a shot from the point by Connor Mackey and deflected the puck past Mareks Mitens to make it a 2-0 Minnesota State lead.

Junior forward Josh French closed out the scoring in the game with an empty net goal late in the third period.

Freshman Dryden McKay, who made his sixth start of the year, stopped all 23 shots he faced in earning his first career shutout.  Tonight's win ups his record for the season to 5-2-0.

Parker Tuomie, who also assisted on Charlie Gerard's game-winning goal, now has eight goals as 12 assists on the season for a team-high 20 points.

With tonight's victory the Mavericks are 12-2-0 (7-1-0 WCHA) on the season.

Minnesota State returns home to face Alaska Anchorage next Friday and Saturday at Verizon Center.
