EDMOND, Okla. --- Fourth-seeded Minnesota State wins in overtime over fifth-seeded Emporia State 2-1 Friday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
This is the eighth win overall for the Mavericks in NCAA Tournament play and the first win since the 2015 season.
The Mavericks lived in the attacking third of the field during the first half, creating many chances for a goal. Senior
Morgan Cottew scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute. Junior
Dakota Wendell had two chances with both being saved, but then dropped the ball off Cottew as she drilled it into the top, right corner for her 11th goal of the season. The Mavericks held an 8-5 shot advantage (3-0 on goal) in the first half and took the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The second half was a different story as the Hornets worked the Mavericks over and took the fight to them. Emporia State was able to answer with a goal coming in the first minute of the second half. Kennedy Hoffman was able to score after a back heel pass from Jacki Martinek to even the score at one. The score remain tied throughout the rest of the second half. Goalkeeper
Alexa Rabune made all five of her saves in the second half and two of them saving the match for the Mavericks.
In the first overtime, the Mavericks had an abundance of chances with the wind being at their back. With 12 seconds remaining, Wendell received a pass from Cottew and shot the ball from 20 yards out. The ball slipped through the Hornets' goalkeepers hands and hit the back of the net, making the Mavericks victorious. This was Wendell's team-leading 16th goal on the season and fifth game-winning goal.
Overall, Minnesota State outshot Emporia State 20-16 (10-6 on goal) with Rabune making five saves on six opportunities.
The Mavericks (19-2-1) will play again on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Tom Thompson Field. MSU will play the winner of the top seed in the central region, Oklahoma Central, and the eight seed, Oklahoma Baptist.
