MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team won their season opener against Waldorf 93-66 Friday night at Taylor Center.
The early minutes of the first quarter were all Mavericks as they pulled out to an early 14-5 lead behind a balanced attack as
Kirstin Klitzke,
Brooke Tonsfeldt, and
Emmaline Polson each scored four. Minnesota State continued to get players involved as freshman
Kristi Fett scored her first career basket on a dime from Monica Muth, and the Mavericks led the game 23-15 at the end of the first quarter.
The Warriors fought back in the opening moments of the second quarter, closing the gap to a 27-24 Maverick lead. The Mavericks responded by going on a 6-0 run before the Warriors went on a 9-0 run of their own tie the game at 33.
Coming out of the half, the Mavericks went on a 10-0 run to give them a 50-38 lead. Ultimately, Minnesota State would outscore Waldorf 22-8 in the third quarter, giving it a 64-46 lead going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter the Mavericks took the opportunity to get their full lineup involved. All fourteen players that Minnesota State put into the game scored at least 2 points in the game and ultimately the Mavericks came away with a 93-66 win.
Polson, in her first playing time as a Maverick, led the team in scoring with 15 points off the bench and added four rebounds in only twelve minutes.
Tonsfeldt led Minnesota State in rebounding with nine and added eight points, four steals, and three assists.
The Mavericks out shot the Warriors 49.4% to 38.9% and out rebounded them 50-30, maintaining the lead for the entire game.
Next weekend Minnesota State will make its first road trip of the season as it travels to Marquette, Mich., to take on Northern Michigan Friday, Nov. 16 at noon, before traveling to Houghton, Mich., to take on Michigan Tech Sunday at noon.
