Marquette, Mich. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team (1-1) lost its first road game of the season to the Northern Michigan Wildcats (3-1) Friday afternoon in Marquette, Mich.
The Wildcats took the early edge in the game, getting out to a 10-3 lead in the first minutes, all three Maverick points coming from
Brooke Tonsfeldt. The defenses for both teams were strict and forced several turnovers which lead to Northern Michigan taking a 17-7 edge into the end of the first quarter.
Minnesota State managed to double their point output in the second quarter behind a balanced scoring attack, but the Wildcats managed to earn 17 once more which gave them a 34-21 lead at the half.
The Mavericks turned over the Wildcats 11 times in the first half and outscored them on the fast break 4-0.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks went on a 9-5 run to bring the game within ten points. The Wildcats were able to respond and were able to extend their lead going into the third quarter and went into the final frame 51-36 over the Mavericks.
Minnesota State once again closed the gap in the opening minutes of the fourth, making it an 11-point game with 4:50 remaining in the quarter. With three minutes to go in the game the Mavericks transitioned to a full court defense with the intent of closing the gap late. Ultimately Northern Michigan held off Minnesota State and won the game 71-51.
Monica Muth led the Mavericks with 11 points in the game and Kristi Fett added nine off the bench.
Tonsfeldt led Minnesota State with seven rebounds and added seven points of her own. The Mavericks outscored the Wildcats 24-16 in the paint and they also held the edge in bench points 22-14.
The Maverick's next matchup is with Michigan Tech (2-0) Sunday at noon CST, in Houghton, Mich.
