Houghton, Mich. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team (2-1) defeated the Michigan Tech Huskies (3-1) in a thrilling overtime game, Sunday afternoon in Houghton, Mich.
The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead 11-4 thanks to a pair of turnovers that led to easy buckets. The three-point line was a huge advantage for Minnesota State early as
Tayla Stuttley and
Monica Muth each drilled a pair giving the Mavericks a 22-18 lead at the end of the first.
The second quarter was almost completely balanced, and the Mavericks continued to convert from the three-point line, which allowed them to take a 36-34 lead into halftime.
In the first half, Minnesota State made 6-14 three-pointers compared to only 1-4 for the Huskies and the Mavericks led the rebound battle 21-19.
Stuttley and
Taylor Drost led the team with 11 points apiece and
Muth added eight.
The defenses for both teams came out strong in the second half, leading to several turnovers and tightly contested shots and the Mavericks maintained a 49-48 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Huskies came out of the break firing immediately going on a 6-2 run to take a 55-51 lead. The Mavericks responded in kind with a 6-2 run of their own, tying the game with 5:24 to go in the quarter. Coming out of a timeout,
Muth drilled a three-pointer to break the tie. With 1:49 to go, the Huskies made a layup to take a two-point lead, but Minnesota State responded with a jumper from
Maddy Olson to tie the game at 64. Both teams had a chance to win it late, but the Mavericks shot went wide and the Huskies last second heave never had a chance, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime,
Drost got Minnesota State on the board early with a pair of layups giving the Mavericks the early edge. That advantage would prove to be the difference as the Huskies couldn't get past the Minnesota State defense and were forced to foul late. With the lead in a fouling game the Mavericks held off Michigan Tech and won the game 72-68, handing the Huskies their first loss of the season.
Drost led all scorers with 21 points and added five rebounds in the game while
Muth added 14 points of her own.
Stuttley finished the game with thirteen points and
Olson also added 10.
Muth also led the team in rebounds with six and assists with 4. Minnesota State maintained the three-point advantage 9-4 led the way in bench points, 26-17.
The Maverick's will return home to take on Bethany Lutheran College Monday Nov. 6 at 6:00 p.m.
