Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (17-10, 10-9 NSIC) defeated the Wayne State Wildcats (21-8, 12-7) Friday evening, by a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23).
In addition to the win, the Mavericks celebrated a single season record breaking performance as sophomore libero
Mara Quam recorded the nine digs required to capture the record and finished the match with 27 total digs.
The first set was incredibly tight as there were no significant runs. Ultimately the Mavericks gained the edge though and took the set 25-21.
The second set was more of the same as there was never a lead of more than three points. Once again though Minnesota State prevailed in the set 25-22 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match behind a consistent defensive performance from the whole team.
The third set was completely different as the Wildcats started with a 5-0 run before the Mavericks responded with a 6-1 run of their own. The large runs continued on both sides before Minnesota State took a 23-21 edge late. With the excitement in the arena building, the Mavericks traded points and won the set 25-23 to hand the Wildcats the eighth loss of their season.Â
Morgan Olson led the Mavericks with 17 kills in the match and was aided by
Alivia Garbe who had 14 kills, and Ashton Lee who had 11 kills.Â
Quam led all players with 27 digs and
Micayla Porter led all players with 24 assists.Â
Tomorrow, the Mavericks wrap up regular season with a matchup against Augustana at 2:00 p.m., in Taylor Center.Â
