Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team (18-10, 11-9 NSIC) defeated the Augustana Vikings (10-18, 5-15) Saturday afternoon, by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15), guaranteeing the team a place in the NSIC Tournament this week.
The first set was all Vikings early as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The Mavericks were able to pull even in the set but Augustana took advantage of a couple errors late and took the first set 25-22.
In the second set, the match was much more even and the score was tied at 15 before Minnesota State jumped ahead with a 7-2 run that led to them to take the set 24-17, and tie the match at one.
In sets three and four the Mavericks never looked back. With the momentum of the match in their favor, they easily took the final two sets 25-15 to ensure the team would win and make the post-season this year.
Morgan Olson led all attackers in the match with 19 kills and
Alivia Garbe added 15.
Micayla Porter led the Mavericks in assists with 27 and a day after setting the Minnesota State single season record for digs,
Mara Quam added 30 more.
The Mavericks will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on the Northern State Wolves Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the first round of the NSIC tournament.
