#23 Mavericks Take Care of Business Against MSU Moorhead

MANKATO, Minn. --- #23 Minnesota State took care of business on Sunday afternoon against MSU Moorhead, winning 3-0 at The Pitch.

The Mavericks controlled the Dragons in the first half, while playing in their pink uniforms to support breast cancer awareness month. Minnesota State allowed one shot in the first half against MSU Moorhead, while taking 19 shots at the other end. As the half was winding down, the Mavericks got one of those shots to connect as freshman Nadia Lowery took a cross from sophomore Claire Barresi and fired it past the Dragon goalkeeper. This was Lowery's second goal of the season and first game-winning goal of her career.

At halftime, Roger Cottew was recognized after battling cancer and passing away seven months ago. The Cottew family spoke about Roger and his love for MSU soccer, while also having a moment of silence before the match. Along with being a big MSU Mavericks soccer fan, Roger was also the father of two current players, Morgan and Taylor Cottew. This game was dedicated to Roger.

The second half was more of the same from the Mavericks. Two goals were added with the first one coming in the 52nd minute when junior Taylor Kenealy scored her first goal of the season. The goal came off a through ball passed by junior Alesha Duccini to push the Maverick lead to 2-0. The final goal came in the 88th minute when senior Morgan Cottew scored off a missed shot off the crossbar for her seventh goal of the season.

The Maverick defense dominated the match by only allowing one shot total with junior Alexa Rabune making the save. Minnesota State also held a substantial lead in corner kicks at 9-1.

The Mavericks (13-2-1, 11-1-1 NSIC) travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for the second time this season, but this time take on Augustana on Friday at 3:00 p.m. They will then return home on Sunday for their final regular season match and senior day against Wayne State beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Head coach Brian Bahl, Morgan Cottew and Taylor Kenealy commented after the game.
