Mavericks Defeat St. Cloud State in first WCHA Season Win

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State defeated St. Cloud State by a score of 3-1 for its first WCHA win this season on Friday night at Verizon Center.

Two goals in the second period proved to be the tying and game-winning goals for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks were skating even with the Huskies in the first period until SCSU forced a turnover of the puck with 52 seconds left to play in the first period. The Huskies were on a 2-on-1 break when a Maverick defender lost her footing. This led to a SCSU goal by Julia Tylke to give them a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

The Mavericks came alive in the second period, scoring their first goal with 4:17 on the clock to tie the game up 1-1. Senior Rebekah Kolstad tipped in her second goal of the season off of senior Corbin Boyd's shot. Twenty seconds later, freshman Brooke Bryant netted her first goal as a Maverick with sophomore Brittyn Fleming finding her just outside the crease with to put the MSU up 2-1.

The Mavericks got an insurance goal in the third period when senior Jordan McLaughlin scored an empty net goal with less than two minutes to play in the game.

MSU outshot SCSU 34-27 in the game and killed off their only power play opportunity. The Mavericks have yet to score on a power-play this season and went 0-3 tonight.

Freshman Abigail Levy had another great game, making a number of keys saves and in total made 26 saves on 27 opportunities while her counterpart, Janine Alder, made 31 saves on 34 opportunities.

Kolstad had a goal and an assist in the contest and Boyd chipped in with two helpers as well.

The Mavericks (3-2-0, 1-2-0 WCHA) will look for their second series sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon as they battle St. Cloud State again at Verizon Center, starting at 3:07 p.m.
