Mavericks Fall to #5 Ohio State in WCHA Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio --- Minnesota State (2-1-0, 0-1-0-0 WCHA) falls to No. 5 Ohio State (4-1-0, 0-1-0-0 WCHA) 4-0 Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.

The opening period of WCHA proved to be scoreless as both teams were trying to feel each other out. The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks 19-8 in the first stanza, but freshman Abigail Levy made all 19 saves for the Mavericks.

The second period was where Ohio State took advantage of the shot discrepancy as Charly Dahlquist tallied her second goal of the season past Levy to give OSU a 1-0 lead at the 9:50 mark. The Buckeyes added goal with 15:35 on the clock when Emma Maltias, reigning WCHA Rookie of the Year, scored her second goal of the year. The Mavericks were again outshot in the period by a count of 19-2.

The third stanza did not prove to be any better for the Mavericks as Ohio State's Lisa Bruno added to the lead at the 6:47 mark. The final score ended up being 4-0 when Samantha Bouley scored with 11:53 on the clock.

The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks by a total of 46-22 while both teams went scoreless in power play opportunities.

Levy made 42 saves on 46 opportunities throughout the night. Junior assistant captain McKenzie Sederberg led the Mavericks in shots with 4.

Minnesota State will look to take the second game from Ohio State tomorrow starting at 1:07 p.m. (ET) at the OSU Ice Rink.
