Claire Ziegler recorded her fourth straight double-double as Minnesota State downed Minnesota Crookston, 64-54, Friday evening at Taylor Center.
The Mavericks (7-14, 5-10 NSIC) jumped out to a quick 6-0 edge with four points from senior
Claire Jordan. The Golden Eagles (5-14, 5-10 NSIC) responded with eight unanswered points to take their first lead of the night, 8-6, at the 4:13 mark. Minnesota State led after the first quarter, 16-12.
Minnesota State found an offensive rhythm in the second frame outscoring Minnesota Crookston, 23-6. The Mavericks used a 10-2 run to open up a 12 point, 26-14, advantage after junior
Monica Muth connected on a layup at the 4:27 mark. After both teams exchanged a few baskets, Minnesota State rattled off four straight three pointers to push the edge up to 20, 38-18, with 1:09 to play in the half. The Mavericks led at the intermission, 39-18.
Muth paced Minnesota State with 10 points at the half, while Ziegler contributed seven points and seven rebounds. The Mavericks shot 36.8% from the field in comparison to the Golden Eagles 23.1%.
Minnesota State opened the second half creating its largest lead of the game, 41-18, as Ziegler netted a jumper with 9:04 on the clock. Minnesota Crookston chipped the deficit down to 12, 47-35, after Micaela Noga delivered a layup at the 3:12 mark. The Mavericks retaliated with six unanswered points to extend their lead to 53-35 after sophomore
Taylor Klug connected on a jumper. Minnesota State led after three quarters, 53-39.
MSU looked to put the game out of reach at the midway point of the fourth quarter following senior
Logan Anderson burying a jump shot, 61-43, with 5:44 remaining. Minnesota Crookston made one final surge with nine unanswered points to cut the lead down to single digits, 61-52, with 1:39 to play. Following a timeout, senior
Mackenzie Dahl found Klug on the perimeter for a clutch three pointer to put the game on ice, 64-52, with 1:25 on the clock. Minnesota State went on to close out the remaining time to pick up the 64-54 win.
As a team, Minnesota State held the edge in rebounds (48-32) and assists (9-7). The Mavericks shot 35.7% from the field in comparison to the Golden Eagles 34.6%.
Ziegler recorded her fourth straight double-double and sixth of the season with a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Sophomore
Taylor Drost contributed 13 points with four rebounds. Klug and Muth rounded out the top performers with 10 points each.
Minnesota State returns to action tomorrow hosting Bemidji State. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
