Mavericks Charge Past Beavers for Second Straight Win, 65-33

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team earned its second straight win downing Bemdji State, 65-33, Saturday afternoon at Taylor Center.

Both teams exchanged points lock the contest at seven by the 4:54 mark of the opening quarter. Minnesota State (8-14, 6-10 NSIC) then got in a flow offensively with nine unanswered points highlighted by a triple from sophomore Taylor Klug to make the score 16-7. Minnesota State led after the opening quarter, 19-9.

The Mavericks continued to dictate the pace in the second frame outscoring the Beavers (4-16, 3-13 NSIC), 13-4. Erica Gartner pulled the Beavers back within seven, 19-12, connecting a three pointer. Senior Claire Ziegler responded for Minnesota State with seven unanswered points of her own to extend the advantage up to 14, 26-12, with 4:15 to play in the half.  The Mavericks continued to apply pressure opening up their largest lead of the half, 32-12, after senior Logan Anderson buried a triple at the 2:26 mark. Minnesota State led at the intermission, 32-13.

As a team, the Mavericks shot 33.3% from the field in comparison to the Beavers 19.2%. Senior Claire Jordan and Ziegler paced Minnesota State with nine points each.

The Mavericks continued to control the game in the third quarter outscoring the Beavers, 19-9. Minnesota State got things started in the second half with an 11-2 run to extend the lead to 43-15 with 5:36 on the clock. Jordan contributed nine points, while Ziegler added two points during the hot streak. Minnesota State led after three quarters of play, 51-22.

In the final quarter, the Mavericks were able to knock down a pair of jump shots from freshman Brooke Tonsfeldt and sophomore Taylor Drost to make the score 54-22 with 8:41 remaining. Minnesota State began to put the contest out of reach as Drost delivered a jumper, 56-25, with 7:52 remaining. The Mavericks went on to close out the remaining time to earn the win, 65-33. The Minnesota State defense held Bemidji State to a season-low 33 points.

As a team, the Mavericks pulled down a season-high 54 rebounds in comparison to the Beavers 35.  MSU shot 30.1% from the field while the BSU shot 28.6%.  The Minnesota State bench also contributed 22 points.

Jordan led the Mavericks with a game-high 17 points to go along with three steals and two rebounds. Ziegler also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points and eight rebounds. Anderson rounded out the top performers with nine points.

Minnesota State returns to action at Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 2. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
