Claire Ziegler and
Mackenzie Dahl registered double-doubles but Minnesota State could not hold off Concordia-St. Paul in the final seconds and went on to fall, 74-72, Tuesday evening at Gangelhoff Center.
Concordia-St. Paul (6-14, 3-11 NSIC) jumped out to a quick 7-4 edge forcing Minnesota State (6-14, 4-10 NSIC) to burn an early timeout. The Golden Bears then pushed their lead up to four, 11-7, at the 5:32 mark. Senior
Claire Jordan netted the Mavericks first three of the night to pull Minnesota State within one, 11-10. Later in the frame, sophomore
Taylor Klug connected on a jumper in transition to regain the lead, 17-16, with 1:07 on the clock. Both teams found themselves deadlocked at 19 after the opening quarter.
Hanna Vidlund got the scoring started in the second frame with a three to make the score 22-19. Minnesota State battled back to steal the lead as senior
Logan Anderson buried a deep three of her own, 26-24, at the 7:10 mark. Minnesota State then built its largest lead of the half, 36-60, as freshman
Tayla Stuttley got a contested layup to drop with 1:44 to play in the half. MSU led at the intermission, 36-32.
At the break, Anderson paced the Mavericks with eight points and two assists. Minnesota State shot 39.5% from the field in comparison to Concordia-St. Paul's 32.1%. The Mavericks also held the edge in rebounds, 28-14, with 10 coming on the offensive end of the floor.
Minnesota State started fast in the third quarter with a 6-2 run pushing the lead up to eight, 42-34, following a Ziegler layup at the 8:11 mark. Both teams went on to trade possessions until Concordia-St. Paul stole the lead, 52-51, after Vidlund netted a layup with 2:13 on the clock. Minnesota State closed out the frame on a 6-1 run to take a 57-53 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks looked to put the game out of reach stretching their edge up nine, 67-58, after Ziegler delivered a layup with 5:35 remaining. Following a timeout, the Golden Bears rattled off six unanswered points to pull within three, 67-64, at the 4:13 mark. Both teams then knocked down free throws before Ziegler netted a critical layup in the paint to put the Mavericks up three, 72-69, with 53 seconds to play. Anna Schmitt responded for the Golden Bears with a game tying three pointer to lock the contest at 72 with 43 seconds left. Following a missed Maverick layup, Schmitt struck again with the game winning layup in traffic with two seconds remaining to make the score 74-72.
As a team, Minnesota State held the edge in rebounds, 48-33, with 18 coming on the offensive side. The Mavericks shot 39.2% from the field while the Golden Bears shot 42.9%.
Ziegler recorded her third straight and fifth double-double of the season with a team-best 19 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Dahl notched her first career double-double with a career-high 13 points and 11 rebounds. Anderson also reached double digits in scoring for seventh time this season with 12 points.
Minnesota State will return to Taylor Center on Friday hosting Minnesota Crookston. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
