Madison, Wis. --- Minnesota State women's hockey dropped its Western Collegiate Hockey Association series finale at No. 1 Wisconsin 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at LaBahn Arena.
Minnesota State (3-20-1, 1-15-0-0 WCHA) came out with energy in the first period – tallying eight shots on goal. However, Minnesota State was outscored by Wisconsin (23-1-0, 14-0-0-0 WCHA) 2-0 in the first 20:00 of play. The Badgers' goals were scored by
Claudia Kepler and
Baylee Wellhausen at 9:15 and 19:47, respectively.
Wisconsin outshot Minnesota State 12-3 in the second period, but
Chloe Crosby (2-6-1), a sophomore goaltender, stopped all 12 shots for the Mavericks to keep the score at 2-0 going into the second intermission.
In the third period, the score remained 2-0 until the Badgers padded their lead with two-late goals. Kepler scored her second of the day at 15:35 and
Brette Pettet capped off the scoring at the 16:25 mark.
The Mavericks were outshot 36-16 in the game.
Crosby made 32 saves for the Mavericks, while
Kristen Campbell (23-1-0) stopped all 16 shots for her second shutout against the Mavericks in as many days.
The Mavericks finished 0-of-4 on the power play and did not take a penalty.
Minnesota State has a week off from competition before traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., for a two-game WCHA series against No. 5 Minnesota on Jan. 26-27 at Ridder Arena.
