McClure Scores Twice as Mavericks Cruise to 5-1 Win Saturday

Fairbanks, Alaska ---  The University of Alaska scored the first goal of the game, but Minnesota State proceeded to score the next five goals with the visiting Mavericks cruising to a 5-1 win in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played in Fairbanks Saturday.

Senior forward Brad McClure scored twice for Minnesota State in the win and sophomore forward Marc Michaelis chipped in with a goal and an assist.

As they did in Friday's 4-0 win, the host Nanooks scored the game's first goal when Tyler Cline, stationed to the right of Maverick netminder Connor LaCouvee, took a pass from Nikolas Koberstein and scored a power play goal at the 2:51 mark of the opening period.

The Mavericks responded with three consecutive goals before the end of the first 20 minutes action in owning a 3-1 lead at the end of the period. Sophomore forward Charlie Gerard, who had just jumped onto the ice following a line change, fired a shot low along the ice that beat Anton Martinsson on the stickside at 10:11 to make it a 1-1 contest. Senior forward Brad McClure got his fifth goal of the year when he scored on an odd-man rush at 16:19 and then registered his sixth of the year at 18:10 with a power play marker on a shot from the top of the right circle that found its way through some sticks and legs.  The goal, which came on a power play, is the 40th of McClure's career.

Minnesota extended its lead to 5-1 in the second period with a couple of power play markers. The first of which came off of the stick of sophomore forward Marc Michaelis at 14:38 and another on a rocket from the point by junior defenseman Daniel Brickley at 18:40.

Neither team scored in the third period as the Mavericks claimed the 5-1 win.

Minnesota State has three-of-ten in power play chances in the triumph. The Mavericks had 36 shots on goal, while the Nanooks totaled 17 shots. LaCouvee, who finished with 16 saves, stands 11-3-0 with tonight's victory.

Minnesota State, which now stands 17-7-0 overall and is 15-5-0 WCHA with tonight's wub, has gone 8-2 in its last ten games.

The Mavericks continue road action next weekend when they play a nonconference contest at St. Cloud State Saturday.

Head coach Mike Hastings commented following the win.
