Minnesota State Skates to 2-2 Tie with Lindenwood

Conway Scores Both Goals for Minnesota State

Wentzville, Mo. --- Amanda Conway scored two goals and Chloe Crosby made 34 saves in net as Minnesota State women's hockey tied Lindenwood 2-2 on Saturday evening at Lindenwood Ice Arena.

Conway, a senior forward, scored her first goal of the evening at 15:12 of the first period with a shot over the shoulder of Lindenwoods' (0-3-1) Jolene deBruyn (0-3-1), who made 29 saves on the evening, to put Minnesota State (1-0-1) up 1-0. Senior forward Lindsey Coleman assisted on the play.

"She (Conway) wasn't in a solid spot in the lineup, but she was working hard," Minnesota State head coach John Harrington said after the game when talking about Conway's work in practice leading up to tonight's performance. "She was shooting the puck well. I said to keep working and you'll get a chance," Harrington added. "I moved her onto a line in the first period and she scored on the first shift that she got out there. She is really working hard and has been working on her shot, and it showed. She had a great game for us tonight — not just the two goals – but a lot of energy and a lot of hard work."
Conway scored again in the second period – taking a pass from freshman forward Brittyn Fleming in the slot and firing a low shot past deBruyn, who was shifting in the crease, to give Minnesota State a 2-0 advantage at the 4:49 mark. Conway's two goals match her total from all of 2016-17 and Fleming's assist is her second in as many games as a Maverick.

"She is going to be a really good player for us," Harrington said about Fleming after the game. "She led our team in shots with seven," Harrington added. "She is a creative player, she is a fast player, and players enjoy playing with her."  "She had a really good game tonight and was dangerous all the time when she was on the ice," Harrington said.

However, Minnesota State got back-to-back penalties in the second period and Lindenwood capitalized – scoring on both power plays to tie the game at 2-2. The first goal was scored by Taylor Girard at the 16:28 mark and the tying goal was tallied by Sierra Burt at 18:13.

Lindenwood would have four more power plays for a 6-1 advantage in power play opportunities on the evening, but Minnesota State's penalty kill did not allow another goal.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the third period and then overtime, but the goaltenders kept the game tied at 2-2.

Crosby (0-0-1), a sophomore goaltender made 34 saves on the evening for the Mavericks, including 13 saves combined between the third period and overtime.

"She really had a good game tonight," Harrington said about Crosby's performance. "She was calm, and collected, and did a great job of steering pucks away from the net, or deflecting pucks up into the netting (out of play), and not giving Lindenwood second and third chances by leaving rebounds in front."

With the tie, Minnesota State finished their season-opening weekend with a 1-0-1 record. Minnesota State takes the ice at home for the first time next weekend when they welcome Robert Morris, which is ranked No. 9 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll, to Verizon Center. The games are scheduled for 2:07 p.m., on Oct. 7 and 12:07 p.m., on Oct. 8.
