Duluth, Minn. --- With the match scoreless in overtime,
Morgan Cottew sprinted behind the Minnesota Duluth defense and volleyed the ball – played into the box by
Morgan Seemuth – out of the air and into the net for the golden goal in the 95th minute to propel No. 15 Minnesota State soccer past Minnesota Duluth 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Duluth, Minn.
Minnesota State (3-1-0, 1-0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) was the aggressor for most of the match — outshooting Minnesota Duluth (4-1-0, 1-1-0 NSIC) 32-10, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. However, the Mavericks had several shots that hit the post or crossbar, and many others that went narrowly high or wide, as neither team could score until Cottew's game-winner in the 95th minute.
The goal is the first of the season for Cottew and the 25th of her collegiate career. It is also the junior forward's sixth game-winning goal in a Maverick uniform.
Seemuth, a junior defender who made her first start of the season on Saturday, earned the first assist and point of her Maverick career.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ryann Rydeen (2-0-0), made four saves to record her second shutout in as many starts this season. The shutout is Rydeen's eighth in nine appearances as a Maverick.
Minnesota State held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sisley Ng (3-1-0) made 10 saves in net for the Bulldogs.
The Mavericks are back in action on Sunday when they face St. Cloud State in an NSIC match in St. Cloud, Minn., at 2:00 p.m.
