Minnesota State Baseball Completes Four-Game Sweep of Southwest Minnesota State

Peterson Moves into First Place on Mavericks’ Career Runs Scored List

Marshall, Minn. --- For the second consecutive day, Minnesota State baseball swept a doubleheader from Southwest Minnesota State to earn a sweep of the two teams' four-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home-and-home series.
 
The Mavericks (19-4, 14-0 NSIC) won the first game with the Mustangs (7-13, 2-8 NSIC) 24-3 and the second game 7-1 at Alumni Field on Sunday. The Mavericks have won 15 straight games overall, including 14 consecutive NSIC games.
 
Senior Eric Peterson moved into first place for career runs scored in Minnesota State baseball program history when he scored his 183rd career run in the first game – passing the previous mark of 182 held by Eric Lonquist (1999-2002). Peterson, who scored four runs on the day, now sits at 186 career runs scored.
 
GAME 1 – Minnesota State 24, Southwest Minnesota State 3
 
Junior right-hander Ricky Digrugilliers (3-0) started for Minnesota State and went five innings while holding the Mustangs to two runs on four hits, one walk and two strikeouts, and the offense erupted for 24 runs in Minnesota State's 24-3 game one win over Southwest Minnesota State.
 
The Maverick offense scored six runs in the third, 10 in the fifth, and eight in the sixth for a total of 24 runs on 23 hits.
 
Senior Eric Peterson moved into first place for career runs scored in Minnesota State baseball program history when he scored his 183rd career run in the third inning. Peterson scored the historic run on a two-run single off the bat of junior Josh Wenzel.  
 
The Mavericks had seven extra base hits, including home runs by junior Ryan Moffett, junior Dylan Dresel and junior Noah Bluth. Freshman Tommy McDonald, senior Hunter Walsh, freshman Teddy Petersen and Bluth each had a double.
 
Junior right-hander Christian Howell and left-hander Austin Franzen each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.    
 
Right-hander Justin Clark (0-3), who started for the Mustangs and allowed six runs – all earned – on six hits, was on the short end of the decision.
 
GAME 2 – Minnesota State 7, Southwest Minnesota State 1
 
Minnesota State completed their doubleheader sweep of Southwest Minnesota State with a 7-1 victory in game two.
 
Junior right-hander Quinn Ahern (1-0) won his first game of 2017 – tossing six shut-out innings while scattering five hits, walking one and striking out seven.
 
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when junior Dylan Dresel tallied an RBI single that chased home senior Eric Peterson.
 
After being held scoreless in the second inning, the Maverick offense scored two runs in the third inning to go up 3-0. Junior shortstop Luke Waldek and freshman Tommy McDonald each drew bases-loaded walks, which scored junior Josh Wenzel and Dresel, respectively.
 
Senior Hunter Walsh hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning to extend the Maverick lead to 4-0.    
 
The Mustangs threatened in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs, but junior right-hander Cody O'Brien got a Mustang batter to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning and preserve the 4-0 Maverick lead.
 
The Mustangs scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and threatened for more, but junior right-hander Bryce Collins came in to prevent any further damage.
 
The Mavericks answered with three runs in the top of the ninth to seal the 7-1 victory. The Mavericks scored on a sacrifice fly from Dresel, a fielder's choice off the bat of Waldek and a steal of home by sophomore Jordan Hart.
 
Senior Trevor Patterson came in to pitch a scoreless ninth inning.
 
Left-hander Cole Peterson (3-1), who surrendered three runs – one earned – on three hits and two walks while striking out one in 2-1/3 innings after starting for the Mustangs, was charged with the loss.
 
The Mavericks return to the diamond to face Concordia-St. Paul for an NSIC doubleheader at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday at MSU Baseball Complex.
