ST. PETER, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team claimed its fourth conference victory of the season as it defeated St. Cloud State 5-4 in St. Peter.
With the win, MSU improves to 6-10 on the season, including a 4-4 NSIC record. With the loss, SCSU drops to 9-6, including a 4-4 conference record.
The Mavericks began the dual winning two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead. The duo of senior
Melissa Mashburn and sophomore
Erin Streeter defeated Abigail Kantor and Marilia Roque Diversi in the No. 1 doubles match by the score of 8-2. Junior
Killian Doran and freshman
Kelly Spielman bested Sommer Kopff and Fernada Quintino dos Santos 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles match as well.
The Mavericks then went on to win three of the six singles matches to secure the 5-4 win. Streeter won in straight sets in the No. 1 singles match against Kantor (6-4, 6-1), while senior
Abby Schmidt defeated Ann Marie White in the No. 6 singles match (6-3, 6-4) as well. Senior
Kelly Lechowski bested Diversi 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) in the No. 2 singles match to help lock down the win for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks return to action on Sunday as they take on Minnesota Duluth at 8:00 a.m., in St. Peter, Minn.
