Rodning, Roach Help Lead Mavericks to Sweep Over Bulldogs

Minneapolis, Minn. --- Minnesota State played a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader vs. Minnesota Duluth Friday night at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis and came away with a two-game sweep, winning the first game 1-0 and the second game 2-1.

The Mavericks got a tremendous pitching performance from junior Brody Rodning in the first game in claiming the 1-0 victory.  The two teams battled through five and half innings of scoreless baseball before Minnesota State scored the decisive run.  Junior first baseman Dylan Dresel led off the inning with a bunt single before being sacrificed to second by Noah Bluth. Then, with two out, junior shortstop Luke Waldek doubled down the rightfield line to score Dresel.  Rodning went the distance for the Mavericks to get the decision and in the process upped his record to 3-0 for 2017. The Gaylord, Minn., native limited UMD to two hits in seven innings of work while fanning seven batters and walking two.

In game two, Minnesota State got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Jordan Hart singled to right field to score Teddy Petersen.  The Bulldogs knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth on a Tyler Wojciechowki with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Grant Farley. The Mavericks retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Noah Bluth's double to left scored Dresel for what proved to be the game-winning run. Dalton Roach, a junior righthander from Eau Claire, Wis., gained the complete-game victory, scattering six hits, while striking out 12 and walking one. He stands 3-0 on the season with the win.

Now 11-4 overall and 6-0 NSIC, the Mavericks have won five games in a row.

Minnesota State and UMD close out the four-game league series with a doubleheader schedule to start at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Minnesota State Baseball Complex.
