Dominant Pitching Powers Mavericks to Doubleheader Sweep over U-Mary

Eric Peterson Scores 175th career run

Minnetonka, Minn. --- Minnesota State baseball swept a neutral site Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with U-Mary on Saturday at Veterans Field – taking game one 3-0 and game two 6-1.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Mavericks (7-4, 2-0 NSIC) took the first two games of a four-game series with U-Mary (4-7, 0-2 NSIC). The two teams conclude their series with a doubleheader on Sunday with first pitch of game one set for 4:00 p.m.

GAME 1 – Minnesota State 3, U-Mary 0

Minnesota State captured the first game – scheduled for seven innings – 3-0 on the strength of junior left-hander Brody Rodning's (2-0) complete-game two-hit shutout. Rodning struck out a season-high eight batters and walked two.

After Rodning retired the Marauders in the top of the first, the Maverick offense scraped across two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior third baseman Eric Peterson scored the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, junior catcher Noah Bluth laced a two-out RBI single that scored sophomore right fielder Jordan Hart for the Mavericks' second run.

The Mavericks added on an insurance run in the sixth when junior center fielder Josh Wenzel scored on an error by the Marauders.

Nicholas Stobbe (1-2), who started for the Marauders and was on the short end of the decision, surrendered three earned runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked none.

GAME 2 – Minnesota State 6, U-Mary 1

Junior right-hander Dalton Roach (2-0) struck out 14 batters over eight innings and the Mavericks won the second game 6-1. Roach scattered five hits and walked none as he earned his second consecutive win.

After U-Mary took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an unearned run, the Mavericks responded with two runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

Freshman second baseman Tommy McDonald drove in three of the Mavericks' runs on two doubles. His first double of the game came in the second inning and scored junior catcher Noah Bluth and junior first baseman Dylan Dresel. McDonald's second double came in the sixth inning and scored junior shortstop Luke Waldek.

Senior third baseman Eric Peterson scored his 175th career run – the third most in program history – on an RBI ground-out by sophomore right fielder Jordan Hart in the third inning.

Travis Stevens (1-1) started on the mound for the Marauders and gave up four runs – all earned – on five hits in four innings. He struck out one and walked none.

The Mavericks and Marauders conclude their four-game set with a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m., on Sunday at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn.
