ST. PETER, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team earned a split Saturday afternoon in St. Peter as it fell to Gustavus Adolphus 7-2, before sweeping Southwest Minnesota State 9-0.
Minnesota State now owns a 5-10 overall record and a 3-4 NSIC record.
The Mavericks began the day with a 7-2 loss to the Gusties. Minnesota State's two points in the dual came courtesy of junior
Lisa Dobbelaere and senior
Abby Schmidt. Dobbelaere defeated Sheila Sullivan 6-7, 6-5, 1-0 (10-5) in the No. 5 singles match, while Schmidt bested Taylor Shortly in the No. 6 singles match by the scores of 6-4, 6-0.
Minnesota State rebounded later in the day with a 9-0 sweep of the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs.
MSU won all three of the doubles matches, including a forfeit in the No. 3 doubles match. The duo of freshman
Monika Ryan and senior
Kelly Lechowski topped Gabby Tellijohn and Hannah Starke 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles match, while junior
Killian Doran and freshman
Kelly Spielman topped Paige Janka and Jenna Gannott 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Mavericks then won five singles matches in straight sets to complete the sweep. MSU won the No. 6 singles match via a forfeit as well.
Freshman
Erin Streeter won the No. 1 singles match vs. Tellijohn by the score of 6-2, 6-1, while Lechowski defeated Starke 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match. Ryan added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Janka in the third singles match, while Dobbelaere and Schmidt won the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches, respectively, with identical scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Minnesota State returns to action on Friday, March 31 as it hosts St. Cloud State in St. Peter, Minn. The dual is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
