Mavericks Set for Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State softball team will travel to the sunshine state to take part in The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Mavericks will face 10 teams from six conferences and eight states over the span of five days of action. 

Mavericks at a Glance: Prior to a weekend off, Minnesota State played in the UAM 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark. The Mavericks went 3-3 on the weekend with wins over #18 Harding, Arkansas Tech, and Central Missouri.

The weekend was highlighted by a 1-0 win over #18 Harding. Neither team was able score in the  first five innings until Jess Meidl connected on a game-winning home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior pitcher Coley Ries pitched seven innings with 10 strikeouts and giving up only three hits. 

1,100 Wins: Head Coach Lori Meyer earned her 1,100th career win following an 8-0 shutout of Arkansas Tech on Feb. 18 at the UAM 8-State Classic.

Scouting Urbana: Urbana is located in Urbana, Ohio and finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 8-35 and 5-24 Mountain East Conference (MEC)record. The Blue Knights are led by head coach Kira Zeiter who enters her second season at the helm. 

Last season, junior Courtney Stewart posted a team-best 55 hits with a .385 batting average. She also struck out 30 batters in 31 games. Sophomore Savannah Sturgil posted a team-best four home runs and added 31 hits. 

This will mark the first meeting between these schools. 

Scouting Southern Indiana: Southern Indiana is located in Evansville, Ind., and has an overall record of 7-1 and is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Screaming Eagles are led by head coach Sue Kunkle who is in her 16th season. 

Junior Olivia Clark-Kittlson has a team-high .522 batting average with 12 hits and three RBI. Freshman Jennifer Leonhart has struck out a team-leading 19 batters and has a 3.30 ERA. 

These two schools met last season at The Spring Games. The Screaming Eagles downed the Mavericks, 1-0. However, Minnesota State leads the all-time series, 2-1.

Scouting Lewis: Lewis is located in Romeoville, Ill., and has an overall record of 3-2 and is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Flyers are led by head coach Becky Pearl who is in her first season. 

Junior Kaylee Prieto sets the standard with a .389 batting average and seven hits. Senior Lainie Schweickert has struck out a team-best 16 batters to round out the top performers. 

This will mark the second meeting between these two schools. In the first meeting, Minnesota State grinded out a 9-7 win over Lewis at the 2005 Rebel Spring Games. 

Scouting Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst is located in Erie, Pa., and has an overall record of 0-4 and is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Lakers are led by head coach Leanne Baker who is in her third season at the helm. 

Senior Rachel DiBartolomeo paces Mercyhurst with seven hits including three doubles and one triple. Junior Heather Nye has struck out six batters in 11.1 innings pitched. 

This will be only the second meeting between these two programs. The Mavericks edged the Lakers, 6-2, at the  Rebel Spring Games in 2009. 

Scouting Georgian Court: Georgian Court is located in Lakewood, N.J., and finished 2016 with a record of 7-39 and 6-21 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record. The Lions are led by head coach Nicole Deganhardt who is in her second season. 

Last season, senior Kelly Hardiman totaled 35 hits including 13 doubles and 19 RBI. Sophomore Jessica O'Neil appeared in 27 games and recorded a team-best 44 strikeouts with a 3.73 ERA. 

In their most recent meeting, Minnesota State downed Georgian Court, 6-1, at the Rebel Spring Games in 2010. The Mavericks lead the all-time series, 2-0. 

Scouting Wilmington: Wilmington is located in New Castle, Del., and has an overall record of 3-3 and is a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Mike Shehorn leads the Wildcats in his fourth season. 

Freshman Rosa'lynn Burton sets the standard with 10 hits this season including four doubles and five RBI. Sophomore Caitlyn Whiteside has appeared in 20.0 innings this season with  a .35 ERA. 

The last time these two programs met was during the 2015 season at the Spring Games when the Wildcats squeezed by the Mavericks, 4-3, in eight innings. The all-time series is tied, 1-1. 

Scouting Saint Anselm: Saint Anselm is located in Manchester, N.H., and finished the 2016 season with a 12-26 and 8-17 Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) record. The Hawks are led by head coach Jill Gagnon who is in her fourth season. 

Last season, junior Amanda Bickford notched a team-best 51 hits with a .386 batting average.  Sophomore Arika Brochu pitched in 142.0 innings with a 3.11 ERA  to round out the top performers.

This will mark the first meeting between these schools. 

Scouting Holy Family: Holy Family is located in Philadelphia, Pa., and finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 30-17 and a 19-7 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record. The Tigers are led by head coach Davon Ortega who is in her seventh season. 

Last season, sophomore Samantha Klem led the Tigers with a .352 batting average and added 45 hits and 37 RBI. Senior Bailey Walters struck out a team-best 70 batters and registered a 1.75 ERA. 

This will mark the first meeting between these two programs. 

Scouting Northwood: Northwood is located in Midland, Mich., and has an overall record of 2-4 and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Timberwolves are led by head coach Gregg Sauve who is in his first season. 

Junior Sydni Pauley sets the standard with seven hits this season with a .389 batting average. Senior Vanessa Ewing has started three games this season and struck out a team-best 21 batters with a 5.25 ERA. 

In their most recent match up, the Mavericks blanked the Timberwolves, 4-0, last season at The Spring Games. Minnesota State leads the all-time series, 6-0. 

Scouting Hillsdale: Hillsdale is located in Hillsdale, Mich., and has an overall record of 4-5 and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Chargers are led by head coach Joe Abraham who was named the 2016 GLIAC Coach of the Year. 

Senior Bekah Kastning leads the Chargers with 18 hits with seven RBI and a .545 batting average. Freshman Dana Weidinger has stuck out 21 batters with a 3.18 ERA. 

The Last time these two schools met, Hillsdale slipped by Minnesota State, 7-6, in nine innings at The Spring Games during the 2015 season. 

Looking Ahead: The Mavericks will travel to St. Joseph, Mo., to take part in the Missouri Western Tournament on Mar. 17. The Mavericks will face Northeastern State at 10:00 a.m.
