Mavericks Bounce Back With 6-3 Win Over Northern Michigan Saturday

Mankato, Minn. ---   After dropping the first game of a two-game league series with Northern Michigan Friday, seventh-rated Minnesota State responded with a convincing 6-3 victory over the visiting Wildcats Saturday.

Senior captain C.J. Suess led the charge for the host Mavericks, scoring twice and assisting on another in the win.  The forward from Forest Lake, Minn., tallied his ninth goal of the year at the four-minute mark of the first period when he jumped on a rebound of a Marc Michaelis shot that had bounced off a post to get things rolling.

Northern Michigan got the equalizer at 7:22 when winger Demico Hannoun rifled a shot from the off wing over the left shoulder of Maverick netminder Jason PawloskiDaniel Brickley's fifth of the goal at 16:03 allowed the Mavericks to regain the lead and the host team entered the locker room at the end of the period owning a 2-1 edge.

The two teams played through a scoreless middle period, but a shot from Riese Zmolek bounced off of Marc Michaelis past Atte Tolvanen at 7:25 of the third stanza gave the Mavericks a 3-1 lead.  The goal is the eighth of the year for Michaelis.  Freshman Reggie Lutz chipped in with his fourth goal of the year at 11:58 and the two teams proceeded to alternate goals in the remaining eight minutes with Suess and Nick Rivera recording empty netters in the final two and a half minutes as the Mavericks closed out the 6-3 win.

Junior goaltender Jason Pawloski stopped 23 shots in the win in upping his record to 5-3-0 on the season.

Suess collected three points in the game with two goals and an assist in extending his point-scoring streak to six games during which he's racked up 6-4—10 numbers. Michaelis finished with a goal and two assists, while Parker Tuomie and Ian Scheid both registered two assists.

Now 14-6-0 overall and 12-4-0 WCHA for the year with tonight's triumph, Minnesota State continues WCHA action next weekend with a pair of games at Alaska Anchorage.
