Marquette, Mich. --- Junior netminder Jason Pawloski was perfect in backstopping ninth-rated Minnesota State to a 3-0 win at Northern Michigan in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played Friday in Marquette, Mich.
Including 12 shots which came on the power play, Pawloski was credited with 26 saves in gaining his second shutout of the season and the fifth of his three-year Minnesota State career.
The Mavericks took the game's first lead when shortly after killing off a penalty and on a play off the rush, sophomore defenseman Ian Scheid took a deft cross-ice pass from senior forward C.J. Suess before wristing a shot past Atte Tolvanen at 10:16 of the opening period. The goal is Scheid's second of the year and turned out to be his third career game-winning tally.
Northern Michigan had three power play opportunities in the second period and outshot Minnesota State by a 12-4 margin, but the score remained the same.
The Mavericks added a pair of third-period goals to close out their third consecutive win. Junior Max Coatta one-timed a shot from the high slot at 8:09 for this first goal of the year (courtesy of assists from a pair of freshmen in Jack McNeely and Jared Spooner) and senior forward Brad McClure curled at the top of the left circle and using a NMU defenseman for a screen, rifled a shot between Tolvanen's left arm and body for his second goal of the year (and 36th career goal). Freshmen Jake Jaremko and Connor Mackey drew assists on McClure's goal.
Minnesota State converted on one-of-five power play chances, while holding NMU to a zero-of-six performance in opportunities with the man advantage.
The Mavericks, who are 6-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 WCHA, are now 6-1-0 in their last seven contests.
Minnesota State and Northern Michigan close out the two-game WCHA series Saturday with a 6:07 p.m. CST face-off scheduled.
