#8 Mavericks Fall to #16 Bulldogs Saturday

Duluth, Minn. ---   Eighth-rated Minnesota State outshot Minnesota Duluth by a 34-26 margin, but fell to the host Bulldogs by a 3-1 margin in a nonconference men's hockey road contest Saturday.

The Bulldogs struck first when Nick Sweeney's wrister beat Connor LaCouvee at 12:22 on an odd-man rush. Just before the end of the period, Peter Krieger's shot from the side trickled through to make it a 2-0 UMD lead at the 19:50 mark. The Mavericks owned a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal in the period.

Minnesota State cut into the deficit when sophomore defenseman Ian Scheid scored his fifth goal of the season at 5:13 of the second.  Marc Michaelis and Jake Jaremko assisted on the goal, with Jaremko's assist extending the freshman's point-scoring streak to five games (he's tallied 3-5—8 during that span).

UMD closed out the scoring in the final stanza after sophomore forward Riley Tufte capitalized on a rebound chance at 18:33.

LaCouvee stopped 23 shots for the Mavericks in the loss and now stands 7-2-0 for the year.

Minnesota State, which drops 9-5-0 overall, finished zero-of-three in power play chances, while UMD (7-6-2 overall) was on zero-of-two in opportunities with the man advantage. Tonight's loss also marks the first time this year Minnesota State has lost two games in a row.

Tonight's meeting between the two schools was the first since 2014-15 season.  The Mavericks and the Bulldogs will play again in Mankato on Jan. 23.

Minnesota State is off next weekend before resuming Western Collegiate Hockey Association action at Lake Superior State Dec. 8-9.

Head coach Mike Hastings commented following the game.
