SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team blanked Sioux Falls, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-16), Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Mavericks picked up their eighth sweep of the season and snap a three-match losing streak to bring their overall record to 12-11 (6-9 NSIC) on the season. Sioux Falls entered the week receiving votes in the AVCA top-25 poll and drops to 13-7 (8-7 NSIC) overall.
The Mavericks started fast creating a three point edge, 7-4, after
Mara Quam set up
Jackie Jones for a kill. Later in the frame, both teams found themselves locked at 17 before Minnesota State rattled off three straight points to make the score 20-17. The Mavericks went on to steal the opening frame, 25-19.
In the second set, Sioux Falls responded with a 6-3 advantage. Minnesota State battled back to take its first lead of the frame following an attack error, 11-10. The Mavericks then seized momentum pushing their edge to four, 17-13, following an
Anissa Janzig kill. Minnesota State would not look back and went on to win the second stanza, 25-18, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third and final set, the Mavericks jumped out to a 12-8 advantage to force a Cougar timeout. After two straight points from Sioux Falls, Minnesota State answered with a 3-0 run of its own highlighted by a Jones service ace to make the score 15-10. The Mavericks continued to find offense stretching their lead to seven, 21-14, after
Sydney Powell smashed a kill past the Cougar defense. Minnesota State went on to close out the frame, 25-16, and win the match, 3-0.
As a team, the Mavericks held the edge in kills (39-32), assists (35-28), and digs (48-41). Minnesota State also tallied eight blocks and eight aces.
Sophomore
Morgan Olson led the Mavericks with a match-best 11 kills while Quam contributed a match-high 17 digs on the defensive end. Freshman
Micayla Porter handed out a team-best 19 assists to go along with three service aces. Jones rounded out the top performers with 15 digs and nine kills.
Minnesota State returns to Taylor Center on Oct. 31 against Concordia-St. Paul. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
