No. 1 Golden Bears Outlast Mavericks at Taylor Center, 3-1

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State Volleyball team won the first set against No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul but fell in four sets, 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 14-25, 21-25), Tuesday evening at Taylor Center.
 
With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 12-12 (6-10 NSIC) overall on the season. With the win, the Golden Bears move to 22-2 (15-1 NSIC) overall. 

Both teams exchanged points to lock the frame at eight before Minnesota State took a two point, 10-8, edge after a Micayla Porter service ace and Concordia-St. Paul error. Later in the set, the Golden Bears used a 6-1 run to establish 20-15 advantage. The Mavericks responded with 6-0 run of their own highlighted by a blistering kill from Jackie Jones to make the score 21-20. Minnesota State went on to close out the set, 25-23.
 
In the second frame, the Mavericks jumped out to an 8-6 lead after a Sydney Powell kill. The Golden Bears then answered to take their first lead of the set, 10-9. Concordia-St. Paul rode momentum to push its lead to four, 19-15, forcing Minnesota State to burn a timeout. The Mavericks went on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 19-18, after an Alivia Garbe point. However, Minnesota State could not get any closer and went on to drop the stanza, 25-21.

Following intermission, Concordia-St. Paul raced out a 6-1 lead in the early moments of the third frame. The Golden Bears continued to find offense pushing their lead to double-digits, 20-10. Minnesota State attempted to make a late rally after Autumn Risch set up Powell for a kill to make the score 20-11. Concordia-St. Paul stole the third set, 25-14, and took a 2-1 lead in the match. 

In the fourth and final set, both teams found themselves deadlocked at 11 before the Golden Bears used a 3-1 run to capture a 14-12 edge. Concordia-St. Paul then stretched its lead to four, 19-15. Minnesota State was able to cut the lead down to two, 19-17, following back-to-back points from Morgan Olson. However, the Mavericks went on to drop the frame, 25-21, and the match, 3-1. 

As a team, the Golden Bears held the edge in kills (59-49), assists (56-47), and digs (74-56). 

Porter passed out a team-best 21 assists to go along with three aces. Jones totaled 12 digs and added nine kills on offensive end.  Freshman Mara Quam posted a team-high 15 digs while Olson rounded out the top performers with a team-high 13 kills. 

The Mavericks continue their home stand on Friday hosting MSU Moorhead. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m., at Taylor Center.
