No. 13 Mavericks Suffer First NSIC Defeat of 2017

Minot, N.D. --- No. 13 Minnesota State soccer suffered its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss of the season at Minot State 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon.
 
After the two teams played to a 1-1 score through regulation, the first overtime period and the first five minutes of the second overtime, Minot State's (11-4-1, 10-3-0 NSIC) Morgan Myers headed in a free kick — taken from midfield by Kelli Creese — past Minnesota State's (13-2-1, 11-1-1 Taylor Livermore (7-1-0) in the 106th minute to hand Minnesota State a 2-1 defeat.
 
The Mavericks and the Beavers played a tightly contested first half. The Mavericks outshot the Beavers 11-7, including a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, but the Beavers scored the only goal of the first 45:00 to put the Mavericks down 1-0 at halftime. Haley Berryman scored the Beavers' goal in the 14th minute. Junior forward Morgan Cottew had a scoring chance for the Mavericks in the 27th minute, but hit the post.
 
In the second half, Minnesota State scored the only goal to tie the match at 1-1 in the 53rd minute. Cottew quickly passed a corner kick to senior midfielder Jenny Hoerter, who took a couple dribbles and fired a shot over the Beavers' goalkeeper Erin Rafferty (11-4-1) for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Mavericks outshot the Beavers 20-11 in the match, including a 12-7 edge in shots on goal, but were unable to score again.
 
Neither team scored in the first overtime period, which was filled with stoppages from fouls. There were a total of 30 fouls called in the match. After a Maverick foul in the second overtime period, Creese took the free kick for the Beavers and connected with Myers to hand the Mavericks the 2-1 loss.
 
Livermore made five saves for the Mavericks, and Rafferty stopped 11 shots for the Beavers. 
 
Minnesota State returns to action for an NSIC match at Upper Iowa on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
