Bismarck, N.D. --- Jenny Hoerter tallied two goals and an assist to help lead Minnesota State to a 5-2 win at University of Mary in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match on Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota State (13-1-1), 11-0-1 NSIC) entered the match with an 11-match shutout streak — tied for the seventh-longest shutout streak in NCAA DII women's soccer history. The streak ended at 1,045:38 consecutive scoreless minutes, when the Marauders scored in the 25th minute.
Hoerter, a senior midfielder, scored her first goal of the match in the 15th minute to give Minnesota State a 1-0 lead over University of Mary (8-4-2, 6-4-2 NSIC). Hoerter scored on a header off of a free kick by junior defender
Abby Hausken, who tallied her third assist of 2017.
U-Mary got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute on a goal by
Mary Dooley, who scored on a header off a free kick. The goal ended Minnesota State's shutout streak.
However, less than a minute later, Hoerter answered back with her second goal of the match and her team-leading sixth of the season – unassisted – in the 26th minute to put Minnesota State back in front, 2-1. The Mavericks retained their lead going into halftime.
Minnesota State scored the first two goals in the second half to increase its lead to 4-1. Junior forward
Morgan Cottew scored her fourth goal of the season in the 58th minute. Hoerter assisted for her fifth point of the match. In the 86th minute, sophomore forward
Taylor Kenealy netted her third goal of the season. Junior forward
Lauren Kizlik garnered her third assist of 2017 on the play.
The Marauders fought back with a goal of their own – scored by
Emma Davies – in the 86th minute to make the score 4-2. However, freshman forward
Molly Sarafolean responded for the Mavericks with her fourth goal of the season in the 87th minute to make the final score 5-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ryann Rydeen (6-0-1) made four saves for the Mavericks, and
Hannah Smith (6-4-2) stopped five shots for the Marauders.
Minnesota State held a 17-13 edge in shots, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Mavericks return to action at Minot State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., in Minot N.D.
